1950 L110 Steering Box seals

Its been over a year since my last post and I finally had time to get into the last of the repairs so I can drive my Binder under its own power.

I'm on the hunt for the shaft seals for my L110's steering box. Paper gaskets are easy to make but the steering shaft and sector shaft seals are proving elusive. Does anyone have part number for these seals? The steering box has the numbers 31245 with a 2 under that cast in the body. Any info would be appreciated

The OEM seal number is142 329 HA. It is very likely this seal has a number on it. It is also very likely the seal is a standard seal. Get measurements and you local bearing and seal house will have what you are looking for.

These are Ross steering boxes and were also used in early Jeep CJ's and pickups. You can probably find the seals through company's that offer old Jeep restoration parts as I have in the past when I have rebuilt a Ross box. Even under the best of conditions they have a tendency to leak oil. Whatever seals you use the best solution to a leak proof box is to fill it with a product called Corn Head Grease. Made and sold by John Deere it works great in old manual steering boxes as it lubricates all the interior parts, does not cavitate and best of all does not leak past the seals. It is available in grease gun tubes at any J D dealer or online. I've been using it in all my old trucks for a decade now and love the stuff!

I think National 340787 would be the sector shaft seal.

What Binder Mike said,
All of my restored Farmall tractors and the R152 have corn head grease in the steering boxes. It turns a bit fluid when agitated where as gun grease does not. At one time there was a short video on JD's site showing how it works.

The sector shaft seal numbers are great thanks.

But isnt there a seal for the input steering shaft? I filled the box with 90W doing a bench service and much of it wicked out of the input shaft. Thats the seal I really need to not only keep fluid in but to keep moisture out.

At least for the L series, MT-63 says the steering shaft upper seal is "not serviced separately", and gives no part number. But I have seen those seals, so maybe a search of Jeep forums would turn up something.

Paul, is it possible to get a copy of the page that shows the L110's steering box (hppefully its an exploded diagram)? It would help me with the teardown and reassembly.

Re: 1950 L110 Steering Box seals

Did a quick search for ROSS TA 12 and stumbled across an exploded diagram of the correct steering box in my L110 which is not a Ross model. Its a Gemmer and the pic also had the parts list.

Steering shaft seal is 647 473 R1
Sector shaft seal is 142 329 HA
(same# as what one of you provided).

Thanks John for the exploded diagram....it helped.
