Exhaust heat spring

Exhaust Manifold Heat control weight spring. I bought the most comparable thing I could find but it seems to be too small and won't work. Does anybody here have a good one laying around or have a part number for one that will work? I bought one made for an IH tractor that is too small.

Re: Exhaust heat spring

Same spring is used on some IH tractors. Steiner Tractor Parts has them. Their p/n IHS3353. I paid $24,50.

Re: Exhaust heat spring

Here's another option. Same p/n as truck manual.

Re: Exhaust heat spring

True Confessions: I still haven't bought the right spring for my truck. The one I have is close but does not function right. When the spring is hooked up it holds the flapper in the warm up position, when I pull the spring off the post the gate swings over to the hot position. The truck gets driven once a week or once every other week. For start up I first disconnect the battery tender, then reconnect the negative battery cable fire up the truck and let it warm up and then disconnect one side of the spring so the flapper goes to the hot position. This work great but I suppose if if the truck were a true daily driver I'd have to break down and buy the right spring for it. Oh the shame of it!

Re: Exhaust heat spring

Dennis....that’s the one I have and I can’t get it to slide on. The end of the shaft has a bulge and the center of the spring won’t slide over it. I’ve tried tapping with a hammer as well and it won’t go. I can try again.

Kevin.....I will look into that one. Thanks.

Re: Exhaust heat spring

nrowles,
Not sure what the bulge is all about. Mine just slid on the shaft into the slot. Here is pic of the one on my truck and one on a spare manifold. Sounds like you are coming along. We were wiring at the same time as I recall. I have mine done now. Been going to put up some pictures but haven't got to it yet.
Good luck with your project.

Re: Exhaust heat spring

What is the purpose of the exhaust heat spring? The one on my truck is missing, but the truck runs just fine so I never thought that it was very important or necessary.

Re: Exhaust heat spring

It controls the heat riser valve in the exhaust. It heats the bottom of the intake under the carb to promote vaporization of the gasoline. It can also offer some help to prevent carb ice, but that is not its primary goal.
Liquid gasoline doesn't burn, it must 1st vaporize.
If the valve is stuck "on" it can cause vapor lock and boil the gasoline out of the carb when the engine is shut off. If it is stuck "off" it can cause poor running when cool and during "warm up".

Re: Exhaust heat spring

Ok, thank you! How do you tell which position it is in?
