So is it possible to replace the inner seal without pulling the axle? Not looking like it. The one side on mine seems to be seeping gear oil. Also how does the bearing get oil to it? Or is supposed to be greased?

Re: R112 rear axle seal and drums?

I just refurbished an axle in the past two weeks. The axle inner seal is 450143. The outer is 451948, replacing the old felt with rubber/spring style. The pinion inner seal is 470530, and I couldn’t find a new felt outer seal. I reused the old one, as the new inner seal will certainly be better than before.

If you replace the pinion seals you’ll need a 1-1/4” socket that fits into the flange, and nothing I could find locally was thin enough. Eventually I had one (actually a common 32mm axle nut socket) turned down to 40mm OD on a lathe. Worked perfectly. The lowly, chisel-scarred pinion nut is responsible for pulling the gears and bearings into tension and alignment. If it is loose, possibly from a previous “fix”, the geometry is wrong and the gears will eat themselves up. Ask me how I know...

I think I am going to leave the pinion seal for now. What model.is your truck? Did your truck have 12"x2" brakes all the way around? Rock Auto has all of the parts but they do not show a spring kit so I need to hunt that down.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, the same brakes. The spring kit is Wagner H7139, one per axle.
