Clutch Bell Crank

Greetings All,
While working on my brakes setup I noticed most of the play in my clutch pedal is due to the worn bell crank on the clutch shaft. Thought I would throw it out there and see what the more experienced IHC'ers think needs to be done.

Either use a bushing in the hole, or fill it with braze and drill it.

Re: Clutch Bell Crank

I would drill out the oval hole to make it round. Next, I would turn down a piece of brass rod for a tight press in fit. Last, drill the brass to size. I think the bell-crank is castiron, so, be careful with the press in fit. Too tight and the cast iron will crack. If possible I might even leave a raised collar on one end of the press-in-rod to act as a stop.
I have the good fortune to have a lathe, so making bushings is easy. I have a milling machine also. A milling machine is a great way to drill a round hole.
If you can, drill one size under and ream to the size you want. Drill bits often make irregular holes. An end mill in a milling machine will make a round hole.
This all sounds so complicated, but this will take less time than making a peanut butter and jam sandwich.

Re: Clutch Bell Crank

Well the belcrank is in the machine shop, I didn't want to take a chance on breaking it ( I do not have a replacement). I've also noticed a lot of play on the plate that supports the clutch shaft, It looks like a heim joint is incorporated into it and the plate bolts to the belhousing. Could I just get a 3/4" heim joint and weld it to plate fabricated to fit back onto the belhousing?

self aligning bearing. IHC used alot of them. Can't be too ridged or it will bind when the engine moves in its mounts.

Fron the picture, it looks like that would work. Another option would be to weld a piece of metal to the heim joint with 2 holes matching the existing bolt pattern.

Re: Clutch Bell Crank

I do not like the idea of welding on Heim Joints. The weld heat will likely destroy the joint.

Here is a bunch of pictures of Heim Joints. Which one would you pick as the best weld victim?
Maybe a person could drill an angle plate to accept the two mounting bolts and the male end of a Heim Joint. ???

Re: Clutch Bell Crank

I used one of these with my old truck, the 4X4 part is different than the 2WD, check it out, see if you think it will work.
