SD220 Engine Hoist Points ?

I'm getting ready to pull my SD220. I have the head and exhaust manifold removed. Where is the best place to hoist from at this point? A buddy suggested buying a few short bolts and hoist from the top of the block. Do you agree?

I use heavy straps and go around entire motor to cradle it up, bolts can strip out with disastrous results

Grade eight bolts and washers through heavy chain threaded all the way into the block, never a problem in 40 years.

When I pulled the entire SD 240 motor out of my truck last spring I took 1/4''x 2" x 2" angle Iron cut two pieces to span two of the head bolts on each end of the head and drilled it for attaching points, this gave me four bolts in the head to attach to instead of the factory recommended two. I've moved the old motor around my yard several times now swinging from my front end loader and the mounts have stayed tight!

I've always used a chain sling mounted by bolts in the head with every engine I have ever pulled. If you use grade 8 bolts and thread them in all the way you should never have a problem with this method.

that factory pic looks like the engine would swing off center bad, I like my wrap around straps, easy and fast, don't have to buy bolts or disassemble/assemble/disassemble anything,

Cummins 885's are pulled off of the rocker box bolts, 1/2x11 tpi Grade 5, two bolt per bracket, two bracket lift, total dressed weight of over 3200lbs, I think you are suffering from over kill with 4) 1/2" headbolts, grade 8, but no one gets hurt from that. I made a fixture that slides into the brackets for a single line lift. install one way if the clutch and flywheel are on, or the other if they are off, for correct balance.

Threaded all of the way into the block is very important. Anything less risks pulling the threads out of the block. It might be advisable to chase the block threads with a tap before inserting the fasteners.
Good one Mike.
