1957 S-100 Electrall truck

After 5 ½ years and many stops and starts, I finally finished the S-100 Electrall truck project this summer. Thought I'd post a few pictures and thank all the members for all the helpful knowledge and experience provided in this forum. Never could have finished the restoration without all the information offered up on this website!

Special thanks to kevin, bedrockjon, Terrell, cornbinder89 and PaulH for supplying some of the parts needed to complete this project!

What is the Electrall power rating? Looks like it should have a fair bit available. Nice work, glad I could help.

That truck is immaculate! I wasn't here for the build so I have to ask, what's this electrall thing all about? Sure looks cool?

Re: 1957 S-100 Electrall truck

It turns the truck into a mobile generator. The Generator in the bed is driven off the PTO. there is a governor on the back of the generator, you put the PTO in, and pull out the hand throttle on the trucks engine, the unit on the back of the generator controls the throttle holding the speed close to what it takes to produce 60 hz. I expect it is either a 1800RPM (four pole) or a 3600 RPM (2 pole) unit.
I don't know much about the unit itself, which is why I was asking.
Should add that because the generator in the back is not turning during normal driving the governor on the engine stays wide open and has no effect on the engine speed when the truck is being driven as a truck, it only is in play when generating.
The main application was made to be driven off of a farm tractor, but the realized the farmer may have need for power from his truck. It was never a big seller either for a tractor or the truck so a very rare to find.

I have been to Don's shop off and on during the restore, I saw this truck early on. The pics in this post in my opinion don't do it justice. It's a GEM!!!! the paint and workmanship is outstanding + P/S too.

Re: 1957 S-100 Electrall truck

Thanks Guys! The electrall generator output is 12.5 KW at 120/208 volt, 3-phase, 4-wire. It needs to spin at 3600 RPMs to provide 60 cycle power. I have a tractor mounted electrall, a trailer mounted electrall and a fast-hitch electrall. The truck electrall completes my collection. The electrall unit made for the truck is slightly different than the electrall unit used on the tractors. The tractor version has all the plug-ins on the bottom of the unit, not a problem when the electrall in 3 feet off the ground when mounted on the tractor. The early trailer and fast hitch electralls were the same as the tractor version, which made the plug-in connections very hard to access. Later versions of the trailer and fast hitch electralls had a connection box mounted on top of the electrall with a hinged cover. The truck version of the electrall used a low profile version of the top connection box. My collector friend Mike in Illinois was able to find this rare truck version electrall. Mike was kind enough to trade it to me, for this project! So this was truly a project only possible with the assistance of many folks! DonO

Hey Don, outstanding work as always! You might not remember me & my Dad, but we know you & Mike. We're father/son from Alberta that friends with Darcy.

I saw this truck 2 years ago in Des Moines IA at the RPRU. Wasn't painted yet, but most of the hard parts were on the truck. Those bumperettes are very uncommon on the front bumper, nice touch. I have seen the rest of his electralls, very cool stuff. He even has a electric square baler.

Looks better then factory new. Nice job.
Curious why the generator unit has a smaller external generator?

My guess would be for DC power.
