Most likely to power the exciter (field) of the electrall.

Binder Mike and CB89 are correct, the smaller unit is the exciter, which is just a DC generator to provide the power for the rotating magnetic field in the main alternator.

Gudgeon Pin, yes I remember you and your dad from the Des Moines Red Power Roundup! The electrall truck you saw at the RPRU was this 57 chassis with the 1953 body off from a R-110. I had to rig up something for the electrall display and that was the best I could come up with. Atthat time, my painter turned meth-head was still holding the 57 truck sheetmetal hostage for more drug money.

No idea how much meth or money it took, but he did what looks like a beautiful paint job. Especially compared to that on your '56.

Re: 1957 S-100 Electrall truck

Hey Paul, I love that 56 truck!!! (for those of you not in on his joke, Paul sold me the 56 short box 4x4 truck about 6 years ago and btw, Paul did a super nice paint job on the truck!)

I recently picked up a PTO gearbox and a Ramsey PTO winch for the 56. The gearbox is already bolted onto the transfer case, but the winch is still in Washington state, My wife's cousin's husband Rick, picked it up for me. Rick is going to haul it to the Red Power Roundup next summer in Huron, South Dakota, where we will meet up and I can get the winch than. Not planning to extend the front bumper to install the winch, just going to doing something like a bull bar extension. I'm thinking the truck will look pretty tough with the winch and those knobby tires you sold me with the truck!

Yeah, the meth-head didn't do the painting on the 57 truck. Once I finally got (most) of my sheetmetal parts back, I cut ties with him and found another painter. The new painter has an actual business, employees and a shop! Finding a new painter was harder than I expected, because I was looking for a shop that would do the body work and painting a (major) piece at a time. That way I could do all the assembling and other work. DonO

I agree with it being very difficult to get a good bodyshop to do anything. There are too many A-Holes and drug users in that trade. My Ford project was held up for over two years because of the "bum factor". Money does not seem to motivate some persons.

DonO - Stopped by to see your truck a couple of times at the IHC Nationals in Troy. It looks even better than the pictures! Excellent job!

Thanks diltonw, did you have anything at the show? It was my first time at this truck show, it wasn't quite as big as I expected but we still had a good time. There was some very nice scouts and pickups on display.
