1954 R120 Wheels

New guy here! Sorry if this has been covered before.
Trying to help out a friend with a '54 R120 find some non split rims. Seems that no one wants to change tires with split rims. LOL
What is the bolt pattern and is there anything out there that will interchange? Will he have to get some custom made wheels? Was thinking that someone should be able to cut the old centers out and re-rim them.
We are in southern Minnesota.

Thanks!

Re: 1954 R120 Wheels

either learn how to change them yourself (not hard) or have custom wheels made. There were some tubeless made in 17.5" rims but they are pretty much made from unobtainium.

If they are a lock ring wheel, most any shop that services big farm trucks can do them. Just my thoughts.

^^^^^^ Agreed , while I change my own, of the three tire shops in my area one is willing to change lock ring wheels.

The bolt pattern is 6 on 7 1/4". This bolt pattern was also used by Dodge and Studebaker on certain models, but those wheels are probably harder to find than IH. IH used those wheels into the '60s. Not sure what year they stopped, but there were more tubeless tires on later trucks.

6 on 7.25 is defiantly a strange bolt pattern. We'll keep searching for a tire shop that will mess with them. Thanks for the replies.

So you get some Yokel to mess with your wheels and all is OK for now. If the Yokel does not know what he is doing it is possible for the wheel assembly to let go and cause injury to or kill anyone in the way of the flying bits.
Even if a person uses a cage to contain the flying pieces, the air blast can injure or kill.

Re: 1954 R120 Wheels

Non drop-center wheels are used on trucks up through semi trucks.

Check out nearly ALL the Loadstar trucks International built up through the 1970's.

I understand wanting to convert to drop-center rims. It's a convenience thing. But any tire shop that services large truck tires, with someone over 40 working there, surely has a cage for safely inflating lock-rim wheels.

No, you can't run tubeless tires. These require rim flaps and innertubes. But tires mounted properly on lock ring rims are no more dangerous than our own Negative Nancy is today.
My posts contain my own opinions...your mileage may vary, void where prohibited, objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear, and alcohol may intensify any side effects.

Re: 1954 R120 Wheels

Buzz, I still run lock-ring wheels (10.00Rx20) but was told by my truck tire shop as of Jan 1 of this year, they will no longer mount them. Not a problem for me as I never had them mount them, but even the big truck tire shop are getting away from it. They still sell and re cap them however.
It depends on area. A shop that does farm, logging or heavy equipment tire work should still do them.
I was surprised by their attitude toward them but was told it was a corp edict because they felt that all lock-ring rims were at least 25 years old, which is not true, but there it is.
The company in question is big in heavy truck tires in the midwest Bauer Built Tire.
All My K's will stay lock ring and tube type but I am phasing out the tube type in my long haul trucks due to the lack of tubes and tires should one fail on the road.
Many container chassies still have 10.00x20 bias plys on them, but a lot of container hauling trucking companies are suppling their own chassies and more and more you will see hub pilot hubs with radials on the chassies.
