IH HBS transmission.

Hello

I am in the process of getting my new to me L-110 operational. It has been parked for 30 years. It has a 3 speed IH HBS transmission. Is this transmission worth a darn? There doesn’t seem to be parts available. It seems to shift into gears and doesn’t make any unusual noises. Is there anything to look at in particular.
Thanks

Re: IH HBS transmission.

Welcome! There is the old "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach. Change the oil lube the linkage and call it good. Some might want to keep the three speed for it's uniqueness and rarity, others may want to swap in a four speed with synchro mesh gears. That depends on what you are doing with the truck.

Post some pictures of your truck when you have a chance.

Thanks. Here is the 52 L-110. Should I start a build thread?

The International made transmission. I am going to try and save.

It looks like you have a good solid truck to start with. I know I'd enjoy a build thread.

I agree with the aint broke, don't fix it approach. But also keep your eyes and ears open on options in case you get an unwelcome surprise in the future.

Re: IH HBS transmission.

As long as there is enough lube, and is not abused, its hard to kill a manual transmission.
People used to say the 7 1/4" rear that Dodge put in the Darts was "weak", after 390,000 miles without a problem I tend to dis-agree, sure if you abuse that trans, speed shifting or cramming it repeated into gear instead of double clutching, you can cause damage, but if cared for will outlast you.
If you asking what it will sell for? I'd say less than scrap value.

I’m intent on using it. By worthwhile I mean are they problematic in any way.

Thanks for the comments. I think I will just change the fluid and run it. Hope for the best. The thing is so small and simple to remove it’s not too big of a deal if it needs to get replaced. Other then having to find a replacement.

I've had an L with a three speed for twenty five years now and have never had an issue with the tranny. It is a great theft deterrent since it seems no one knows how to shift one.
