Front bumper 1956 S112

Anyone have any dimensions on front bumper 1956 S112, also any ideas on build for one, I'm thinking of getting 3" square tubing and splitting and weld end to end!

The F1 bumper is probably your best choice. The 56 bumper in particular is rare as hens teeth and you'll be very lucky if you find one. My truck has the original bumper and I can give dimensions as best I can but it is a more complex shape compared to an L or R bumper. Maybe start by googling up a good picture of the 56 bumper and study it to see if you want to tackle making one. I know it's way beyond my fabricating skills.

Re: Front bumper 1956 S112

for some reason S trucks came with the hen's teeth bumper, and others came with the L, R, bumper from the factory,

not sure why, maybe the L style was a heavy duty option VS the wimpy S style, OR they went back to L style after many complaints about how easy the S one bent,

if you google 1956 International images you will see about 2-1 pics with S style but lots of old style bumpers on S too,

I have the skills to fab one but I'd rather put effort into getting running and removing dent's, I realy appreciate the info.

Re: Front bumper 1956 S112

I installed a WARN winch and Warn bumper on my R120 until I had a bumper for this truck. I was OK with keeping the WARN system because it looked good. I bought a Jeep J20 for $100 then sold the Jeep and kept the Warn winch and bumper.

Re: Front bumper 1956 S112

Having looked at length at numerous bumpers for my L, I decided on the F-1 bumper. It is a little shorter side to side than the L bumper and about an inch shorter top to bottom than the L. Additionally, it has a smooth face whereas the L bumper has “character” lines top and bottom. My biggest deciding factor is that the curvature of the F-1 bumper seemed to be similar enough to the L bumper. I ordered my F-1 bumper from NPD in plain steel, welded up the mounting holes and re-drilled them to match the frame ends of the L. I had to modify the frame ends to make them fit inside the F-1 bumper by slicing a small triangular shape out of the top of the frame end and bringing the flange of the frame back down to fit the side of the frame. After welding and trimming appropriately, the bumper them mounted directly to the frame. Once it was fitted perfectly, the bumper went out to be chromed along with the other pieces being renewed. Obviously chroming is optional. Paint, if you want, would be just fine.

Re: Front bumper 1956 S112

I think in modern pictures of S trucks the number of trucks with L style bumpers is due to the original not surviving. It'd be my guess that IH cleaned out the parts bin of L style bumpers for the very first run S trucks until they were mostly used up and then the new style went on. They must have held some in reserve for replacement parts on earlier models too.

My S bumper was like a pretzel but luckily still there. I spent hours with a torch and 5 and 10 lb. hammers straightening it out. For a working truck it is a wimpy design but OK for a resto.
