I agree, this is not where IH was putting their development effort at the time.
Also, it was a big help production-wise that all these engine block castings could be machined on the same equipment, as I think someone else already mentioned.

As a side note, the C221, D236, C263 and D282 were introduced for the 1958 model year and the C301 for 1963.

When they changed to a step-head piston in the SD220's, increasing the compression, they switched to a 2-bolt exhaust manifold with smaller diameter exhaust outlet. Any idea why?

I have two different trucks with BD264 engines. One I know to be original with the 3 bolt flange on the manifold (big pipe!). The other has the two bolt outlet with the small pipe. Original or not? The BD240 in my S160 had the 3 bolt exhaust outlet. Just some more confusing information for you. I have since changed the manifold on the BD 240 for a better, non cracked exhaust manifold and it now has a two bolt exhaust outlet with the small pipe.

Did a search for "International C263 exhaust manifold" since the 240 used the same one in trucks as the 264.

Most I looked at have an offset outlet and there are adapters listed as well,doesn't seem to be a direct replacement. Not a tractor guy,so I'll say no more.
Scott, thanks for this info, I've added it to my database. After getting this info, I finally got around to looking at what I had on these motors.
The BD240 I got came with this manifold, three bolt.
I'm showing the other manifolds for info and clarity on the numbers.
This is the data on the two bolt.
This three bolt and the two bolt above were from the SD220. One of them I got from E-bay over 7 years ago, but I don’t remember which one it was. I don’t know if I still have the pipe flange to match to the manifold to determine which one it was, still looking.
All the numbers are different and I have nothing to identify them with. Do you have any info on them? Some of the numbers you listed on your post were very close.

Which 3 bolt looks bad? I sent pics for two 3 bolts, #79129 R and 78129-R1.
