This is a list of the vehicles that used the TREMAC T5. There were about 15 million of them made, so finding one should not be a problem. A local auto wrecker was recycling them because they had several hundred in stock. They sell here for as little as $100. A T5 will easily handle the wimpy 220SD output.
These TREMAC transmissions have three basic positions for the shift lever installation and there are exceptions to that with after-market parts. These transmissions are adaptable to transfer cases for 4X4.

So which one will fit the best in the trans cradle on the frame and requires little mods to make work

For that Ethan, you will probably need to crawl under and do some measurements. Then go to your local Pick a Part or salvage yard and again measure. Easy is in the eye of the beholder, along with skill level and desire to accomplish. Once bolted up to the engine, fabricating a mount to hold it in place does not seem hard to me, but I have access to a lift, welder, heavy drills, etc.

My mom had a 280ZX she said she could shift it with her pinky so maybe that would be a good choice?

as posted before, swapping out a late model transmission to your original old 220 is very involved, with many issues already listed,

if you just want to lower RPM & get better highway speeds swapping out the rear-end is a lot less work and way less complicated.

remove old axle, bolt in new axle after moving mounting saddles, connect brakes, re-fab driveline & U-joints,

still a lot of work, but way better chance of success than mating the new trans. to the engine.

in any case, best to do your research and gather your parts Before you start tearing it apart so you don't risk your truck being another one of those unfinished projects listed on craigslist.

would a Dana 44 or 60 fit well?

There used tho be an admin here who had a site with lots of info on the Ford explorer axle swap. Seemed like it was a good candidate.
