I think this was discussed before, but couldn't you put a tilt-valve head on the SD220 and use the Tilt-valve pistons then? If I remember right, the block/bore is the same. Was the stroke different? Just wondering, cause it might be easier to find a head than 6 pistons

i recently bought some tilt v pistons thinking they would fit a sd motor . i was wrong the TVs wont fit an sd .they are clearly too tall .the TV rods are also a different design and can only be used on a TV block with a different oiling system . the SD rods are hollow and allow oil to flow through them , while the TV rods are solid . im not Dr. Tesla but i think im right . so , ive got 6 TV pistons , rods, wrist pins and keys [ or whatever there called ] for sale .signed kevin from ky

Kevin, from kY, is there a reason you could not use the SD rods and connect the tilt-valve pistons to those? Or were the Pistons to tall even using the SD rods.

the rods are alll the some size .the TV are just tall and they cant be shaved off the top.

I looked for Flat top pistons for my BD240 (same piston as BD220) for 8 months. The only ones I found were from a guy on Ebay that said he knew another seller that had a set and it would cost me just $125.00/piston. Egge was $110/piston and I realized that this 240 was going to have sloppy pistons in it. I have it all back to gether but need to take my water pump up to Casa Grande and get it rebuilt and I'm still looking for a double narrow groove frt pulley and the water pump pulley. As soon as I get those I'm going to fire it up and see if it makes any obscene noises or maybe the GODS will look down and have compassion and it will purr like a kitten!!!!!!!

I found answers to my previous questions by checking out this site more....pays to read before posting a question.

Nikkinshop and Bedrockjon provided the following information on a previous post. Thanks for the info. I'm still learning about these internationals and
I do appreciate the great advice from this site.

The BD's came in 220, 240, and 264 cubic inches. In the '60's they all would be what was known as a tilt-valve engine[as differentiated from the straight-valve Silver Diamond 220 and 240, and the straight-valve BD 220 and 240 of the mid-1950's]...tilt valve engines having a slightly wider valve cover. The BG engines' primary difference from the BD engines was a sealed crankcase ventilation system and a PCV valve, rather than a breather cap at the oil filler on the valve cover and a road draft tube on the tappet cover. And even though the BG engines were the same bore and stroke as the BD's, they were designated BG-221, BG-241, and BG-265. The valves were tilted off straight up and down, presumably to improve volumetric efficiency.
simply put, when IHC made their model change in 1950, they dropped the flathead motor, and introduced the Silver Diamond overhead valve engine,
it has flat top pistons with the valves located straight up and down over the piston,
the BD and BG were a improvement on the original motor with domed pistons and valves at a slight angle above piston, higher compression for better performance,
you can quickly tell them apart as tilt valve cover has a ridge running front to back on top. SD straight valve does not.

when IHC first made the SD motor, the 220 pan was stamped 220,
they used that pan on all sizes of motor, I've had 240s and 264s with the 220 pan, they must have had a ton of em in stock. but I don't think I've seen a 220.5 pan.

in between the flat top pistons and the tilt valve ones ,there was another piston version the was stepped up [ not as high as the TV] and used 3 rings . tru story just FYI. kfk

L112 From PA, Your pistons are technically a 4 ring piston, 3 compression rings and 1 oil control ring, that makes it a 4 ring piston.
