Re: Tachometer

I dont agree with their logic or drawing. The high tension winding is not common with either the + or- of the coil but is grounded to the coil case. To do otherwise would put the high coil voltage thru both the points and condensor. Not to mention that the primary wire to the points would be carrying the high voltage, you would see it arcing to ground. Also in one paragraph he says the secondary is "ac" while talking about which way the spark jumps, which can only be influanced if the output is DC, and AC spark would jump both ways with the cycles. The output of a coil is DC but not a smooth or consistan e current but more of a "sawtooth pattern", as it ionized the air.
Spark can be either ac or dc but in a battery and coil it is dc. An ingniter for a home furnas is ac.
Some coils (like coil packs on modern cars or some motorcyle coils) have each end of the secondary connected to a plug, one fireing at TDC compression and one wasted spark at TDC exhaust on a mated cyl.

Re: Tachometer

ok guys so i switched the wires this morning and fired it up it sounded terrible it was skipping horribly and when i reved it, it sounded like it was on its last leg, i switched them back now it sounds like either a dying motorcycle or a lawn mower, (maybe because its 47 degrees)

Re: Tachometer

Clean and set points, make sure you didn't disturbe the condensor wire, set ign timeing. Make sure the coil is wired for the correct polarity,

How do you wire it for polarity?

Like I said, + to point for + ground, - to points for - ground.

Buzzman72 wrote:In old, non-vented points sets, the contacts would end up leaving a "deposit" of metal from one contact to the other. I was looking for a diagram illustrating this, but couldn't find one...but I recall in years past seeing a diagram illustrating the polarity of the points and how it affects the deposits...whether they traveled from the stationary to to moving contact, or vise versa.

Maybe someone else can find that illustration.

On some magneto's the flow thru the points reverses with each fireing. That is because the rotateing magnet amature, with each 180 degs the voltage induced in the primary reverses. On single cyl mags, this is not often the case, but on multi cyl it is.
It is one reason why mag's are the prefered ign for spark ign in aircraft.
With this system any material transfered get transfered back on the next fireing.

Re: Tachometer

Ok she just wont run good with the coil wired that way which is a little puzzling and also when i opened the hood I saw this small section sort of oozing a tad of bubbling coolant, does that mean i need a new head gasket again? :t0116:

exactly "again"?

did you re torque the head after you got it to operating temp after first torque? after reaching operating temp you are supposed to re torque, and re adjust the valves, not too tight or you'll burn em up, they are supposed to clatter,

did you put a straight edge on it or have it milled flat? just replacing a gasket on a warped head will not fix it,

Re: Tachometer

Yes it was resurfaced new valves ect, i torqued in sequence and adjusted the valves perfectly, i dont understand why it would blow again
