I think you are right, but I thought the return passages on a SD head were pretty big,

I gotta go look at my spare in the garage

I'd like to change my answer to where are oil passages on SD for $600. Alex.

the oil return on a SD motor's head is down the holes the pushrods come up thru, so next to impossible to not drain back down into block, there will always be some oil laying in the recesses of the head casting,

I think the terminology being used here is being misunderstood (at least by me),

now you say you are struggling to remove valve cover, but how did you see no oil in head with it on?

I think you mean the tappet cover on side of block?

Re: Oil back up

Bedrockjon, Is the special headbolts for oil flow used on the SD 220 engine as well? I have to look over my head bolts again...I missed that if there were ones.
I did not see in the service manual anything about their use or location on the SD 220 engines.

Yeah, the terminology of "valley cover" on an inline 6 went right by me. I've been looking for that valley cover for a long time.

now, I have not torn down a SD motor in a loonnnngg time, so I don't remember exactly, repair manuals state that the BD motor has the front rocker arm hold down bolt has a oil passage in it, but doesn't say that specifically about the SD motor, but it says to inspect SD as listed for BD? so what does that mean?

a BD is basically a SD with some improvements, I'm trying to find pic of the oil circuit of an SD, it will show path where oil enters head to rockers,,,

to be continued,

Kevin might know more specific

Re: Oil back up

Thanks buzzman, interesting it shows the oil passage up the front rocker arm bracket, but the factory manual says to install rocker bracket with oil passage in third from front position,

maybe in my fried brain (I blame the 70s & 80s,,,,,& well part of the 90s)

it is the rocker bracket that is stepped in SD not a headbolt, and it is headbolt in BD motor, aww crap, don't listen to anymore I have to say about this,

someone else knows for sure. I've already confused myself.

Re: Oil back up

I looked at that diagram, and it shows the oil routed like it has a full flow oil filter, which I thought the SD did not have. I thought it was the BD version and newer that had the full flow filter, which puts the accuracy of that diagram in question. Something printed for the salesman to make a sale, not something for the mechanic to base his work on.
