Post from the 103, thought you may want to see. I do not know when the tilt valve was offered, I gave one of the members a tilt valve piston, he gave it to his builder, and it would not work, but I heard IH made Flat Top High Compression pistons for Hi altitude, Don't now

For everybody that wondered, the high compression (tilt valve) pistons didn't work in the BD240. The machinist said there just wasn't enough space in the older head to come close to accommodating the crest on the tilt valve piston. If the inside of the piston hadn't followed the contour of the outside, he could have taken some off the top of the piston and made it work. Kevin, thanks for the piston, we tried! The machinist is now going to knurl the bottom of the pistons. He said it won't take all the slop out of skirts but it sure will help.

You might check these guys out for the pistons you need. I got new ones for my GRD- 214 from them.

The supplier feels the piston carton were mislabeled so the wrong ones were sent to the engine shop. I will stop by tomorrow to see the difference between the original and what was received. Thanks for all the great advice.

So Here are pics of the two pistons. My apologies for the not so clear pic on the original piston...I must of moved my phone.
The high compression piston was shipped by mistake to the engine shop doing the engine work for me. Apparently these are still fairly easy to get. The flat ones are getting harder to find. The supplier has flat piston blanks (larger dia) that he machines to the size over you want...in my case .030 over. I think you can get them up to .090 over.
I don't know the difference between a standard piston and a high altitude piston. Is the piston actually longer?
Does anyone know up to what year the flat tops pistons were made for the SD220 engine?
What is the main difference between a BD220 and a SD220 and a BG220 engine? And what does BG stand for?
The engine specs look the same to me.

L112, who is the piston supplier? and what is the cost? A lot of guys interested in pistons on this site. May want to check the ctr of the pin to the top of the piston, I have never changed that type of thing, your builder can measure and know.

http://www.egge.com/kits?make=INTERNATIONAL Unfortunately I just found out they don't have any of the flat head pistons left at this time and may not have any until after May or June when they do more casting. The high compression ones they have on the shelves, which I believe are for 1960 and newer engines or engines with a different head.
Does anyone know of any other place that sells the flat top pistons for the SD 220 engine?
Is there a tractor engine that carries the same piston?
Right now I am stuck until I locate (6) .030" oversize flat top pistons.

L112, I cant see if your flatop piston is 3 or 4 ring, I will look around, maybe scott could help also, they are out there somewhere.
