Interesting, I wonder how that H got into that 50's body. Kind of implies that the H was the oldest Cummins in a truck, which is not the case. The oldest surviving H, may be. Driven thru that area myself, there are plenty old vehicles laying out in fields. Glad it is going "home" anyway.

Re: IH w/Cummins

Neat story. It looks like a K series truck that has been re-cabbed with a 55 or later cab. Probably an oil field truck at one time.

Sure doesn't look like a K frame to me!

Re: IH w/Cummins

The grill area looks like a K series to me and the cab just doesn't fit the grill. The parking lights on the side of the grill are typical of a K series or an early L series. The cab is not an L. I was looking primarily at the grill area, what you can see of it, when I said I thought it had been re-cabbed. Of course the grill area may have been transplanted with the engine to the R series chassis. I don't know.

Re: IH w/Cummins

The "Westcoasters" had a similar "nose" to the K series. But the springs are backwards for the K and other stuff makes me think it is not a K

I'm not that familiar with the K series chassis and you are correct about the west coasters but I don't think that's a 405 cab or grill. Using the SWAG method, I would guess the owner took out the old 6 cylinder gasser and put in the diesel. Who knows, it may be a combo of multiple trucks.

Re: IH w/Cummins

That's a neat story. Dig a hole and bury it? :smash:
I'm thinking it's a mashup of many components. Cab has R-190 emblems on it so that's definite. The grille sits down inside the frame so the fan will match up with the shroud so I'm pretty sure it doesn't belong and it's not from a 405. Looks like a KB12 or 14. I looked through my R-190 literature collection at the chassis pictures and the spring hangers and running boards/brackets match the pictures. I think the cab and chassis are 190 and the steering box was replaced with an inboard steering arm unit and relocated ahead of the axle and outside the frame to make room for the Cummins. No idea on the long frame horns, though.

Re: IH w/Cummins

Others have pointed out that the front axle is a Mack (has Mack on the end of the hubs) Whatever it is, it a mix of parts. On JOT they pointed out that someone has a documented AC Mack with a HB Cummins that was installed in '37 or '38.
