Rearend swap

Can anyone suggest a replacement rear end for my 52 L110? I will be using a v-8 Ford motor and trans so I think a Ford rear only makes sense. Are there any that are bolt on or will all end up having to be modified?

Re: Rearend swap

A ford 8.8 out of an Explorer. It is the right width and bolt pattern and you can find them with disc brakes.
You will need to change the spring perches.

Source for new spring perches to fit your springs:

http://www.omix-ada.com/leaf-spring-perch-1-75-inches-wide.html?

Some vital Ford 8.8 specifications:

http://www.drivetrainshop.com/Ford_8_8_s/100.htm Lots of "upgrade" parts listed here, too. As you can see, you can change gears and run anything form a 3.08 to a 5.71 ratio...plenty of room to custom-tailor the gear for the transmission gearing, rpm range, and tire size of your truck. And that's just from THIS site; there are plenty of others.

'95-up Explorer rear will also have disc brakes...always a good upgrade. If your truck now has the driveshaft e-brake [as mine does], you can eliminate that.

Spring Perches at Northern Tool for trailers are 10 bucks, Info Only. Don't now if they are a nation wide chain.

Sheesh, spring perches?
Cut the old ones off the original differential and reshape a little to fit the housing diameter.

Re: Rearend swap

On the off chance that the mentioned good ideas do not suit a person, they could make their own perches with a hole saw and some square tube. Take the hole saw out of the equation and the perches are about $2 each.

Re: Rearend swap

Sorry I brought up spring perches.

I just thought that not everyone has a 3-1/4" hole saw.

My bad.

Re: Rearend swap

Cheaper than a hole saw here at etrailer. Same place I bought mine for Ford rear end 8.8 axle swap.

I'm not done with my Ford 8.8 axle swap yet since I am now going in for my 5th hernia :t0174: repair but here is the link to my axle swap on my S-102.

Re: Rearend swap

As a point of reference, when I ordered a new 9" rear end for my L110, I needed to know the length between the mounting surface on one side to the mounting surface on the other. What I measured was 59.75". Depending on what you are going to do for tires and wheels (stock setup vs. aftermarket), you may want to work either side of that dimension to suit your needs. There is a fair amount of clearance around the tire inside the fenders to play around with the setup you may want to choose if you aren't going stock. The wheel bolt pattern is 5 lugs on a 4.5" bolt circle. If you're going back to a stock setup, look for a rear end that is close to the 59.75" width.
