Someone in our tour group cracked a similar joke.

I've been sketching some ideas this morning. My idea is a bolt on adapter plate that will allow someone to run a spin-on filter on a BD style canister base. Criteria:
1) Easy install- one bolt.
2) Reversable- no mods to original housing


So here's the loose sketches (disregard the latent image- I'm working on re-designing the circuit board of an old tachometer).

The first pic shows the adapter plate.
The next two pics are of several other ideas for the threaded nipple.
I'm leaning towards the last rendition.

Obviously these are just sketches. I see potential here. I doubt I could ever make money on them, could be a nice way to fill spare time some day...

I made some for British biult buses as even though I had a Fram # for the filter, they were not avaiable in N/A. What I learned was: don't weld the plate to the center tube as it is hard to get it 90 deg to to the tube and sealing problems result.
I'm trying to remember how I attached the bolt that went into the houseing to the tube... And I can't remember. I might have threaded the inside of the fliter base so the tube threaded into the base.
Filter bases aren't pipe thread so you need smooth bore tube, then thread to your filter.
As I stated I would stick to canister filters as long as elements are avaiable., you could pull the pipe plug to drain the filter hosueing before changeing the filter.

Before you go all gung-ho making an adapter...

Be aware,
Spin-on by pass oil filters do not have built in pressure relief valves nor anti drain back valves (with a very few exceptions),the majority of full flow filters do have PRV's and many have ADBV's.

If you really want a BP filter why not just buy a remote mount filter base? There are a number available,Fram,Baldwin,WIX and others make them. 5/8-18 appears to be the most common thread with 3/4-16 2nd for smaller engines. Then there's the fancey-schmantzy :t3901; ones for performance engines.
Now if you had a GM or Ford adapters akin to your drawing are already made,what a surprise huh?

I don't want to weld the threaded tube to the adapter. I was toying with the notion of making the adapter out of aluminum and the tube will be steel. Initially I was thinking 2 gland nuts to secure the tube to the adapter. I'm up for welding the internal flange to the threaded tube. That flange is what the securing bolt will run through to secure the adapter to the base. I would like to thread the adapter so the threaded tube into can be secured to the adapter tightly.

I thought I had seen NPT threaded filters... No matter. Whatever filter I would settle on I would cut the threads on the tube to match. I should have all of the gear sets to cut any thread I need with my lathe.

I'm inclined to run the original filters too, but the tinkerer in me sees an opportunity to make something. I'd never retire off of them, but perhaps I could make a few, sell em, break even, and spend more time with the tools my Dad left to me.

I can tell that's a ton of good info to review. I found the Fleetguard catalog is very very slow to load- for what its worth.

I was intending to create the adapter for use with full flow filters.

Post pics of your results and what you ended up doing. I should of looked into this more before having block cleaned since it would of taken care of any filings from drilling holes.
