Either you've got really small hands or that's one big honkin' filter. Can you say robust!
You delivered the pictures but, there's no description what or where it's from and I would suppose it's to replace the sock filter of the SD engine? Will you be able to get replacement cartridges from IH or NAPA, Pep Boys, Autozone, etc.?

They aren't huge paws, but they aren't little girl hand either. It is huge...

The filter element appears to be widely available from baldwin/napa/fleet guard/etc.

I still want to spend more time reviewing the cut sheet, but the short of it is remove the original sock filter base, install the full flow base. Drill/tap the return fitting into the block side. Install the return hose. I'll get an element and take some measurements next time home. I hope I don't have to pull the engine to fit this.

You got that off ebay, didja? I was looking at it but couldn't decide if it would work.

I did... I wasn't sure at first, but when the extra pictures were posted the gasket p/n made me comfortable enough to take the chance.

Looks shorter than the original canister. Are you suppose to dump the filtered oil back into the oil tunnel on side of engine (pressure side of pump)?
So you have two ports in and one port out? Or one is the bypass out? Trying to understand how the filter works. I realize the Factory one doesn't do much since the oil can just bypass the filter. I assume even on today's engines and filters that a percentage of the oil is bypassing the filter during the oil cycle. Let us know how it works Jake.

I wish I had more time to inspect it before I left for work. All I could do was take pics and scan the cut sheet. I'll review everything and update as I learn more. Obviously anyone else with info is welcome to post up any info they may have as well.

I've studied that gasket and the mounting base and am still not sure how (or if) the two side stay separate. I assume the two sides are supposed to stay separate because of the cast rib down though the middle of the base, but the holes in the gasket seem to suggest that there is some bleed over side to side. Am I seeing that right? I know the gasket gets compressed when it's all bolted up to the block, but the resulting gasket thickness will be a few thousandths of an inch gap where the holes over lap side to side. Perhaps it's supposed to be that way. Maybe it's an optical illusion with the camera angle......

Jake,

Forgive me for asking a related question on your post. I assume you Oil Filter flange mounting area is the same as my photo. I want to see if I understand the oil passages in the face of the block where the filter housing mounts. The larger right hole comes from the pump and also goes up the block to the lifters thru the third bolt from the front...or maybe that's the smaller hole that does that. The far left holes seems to connect to the oil passage tube along the block. Is that correct?

Ooff... I hadn't made it to the gasket yet. I started looking more closely at the copy I made of the cut/install sheet. It would appear that this was originally designed for a BD engine. It's blurry, but I think it says BD 220,240,264. All of the BD filter housings I found pictures of show a growth on the back cylinder side of the housing. I'm wondering if this was an early production/prototype item. I see the BDs and the SDs appear to share the same oil pump. Suggesting that the oil gallys in the block are similar. It would seem the position of the ports in the filter mounting boss are the same. They are both capable of using the same "Deluxe" oil filter. I found a bd/bg engine manual. It describes in pretty good detail how the full flow filter housing works. One of the valves is a high engine pressure relief valve- the oil will dump to pan. The second valve is a filter bypass valve- if the filter pressure rises over 12-15psi. The valves are supposed to be marked in the housing. I didn't see the markings, but some basic probing should sort that out.

Because this is missing the "growth" on backside I think it's just the ticket for my engine.
