hydrovac info

removed hydrovac unit from my 51 L-120 . thinking about rebuilding or having it done.$305.00 to send it off for rebuild .been checking on a complete kit so I can rebuild it but no luck. must be looking in wrong places. also there is a check valve mounted on firewall and a filter on unit itself , can I still get that? just finished a complete brake overhaul and brakes work good . driving it around for a few days practicing the double clutch shifting. now its time to put the hydrovac unit back on. but not till I am sure I can get all the parts. one other thing I found when I removed the unit 6 months ago the brake lines that go to the unit look like copper. they were mounted to frame in a double line clamp with a fine thread IH bolt with dot on top like most of the bolts I removed all over the truck and parts truck .I ask a friend of mine that worked at dealer from 51-75 and he said they did stuff like that back then. [copper lines] on hydrovac. I ask who they were? :whistling2:

Re: hydrovac info

light trucks generally didn't come with a hydrovac back then, could be a dealer add on or? someone added one later,

I put one from a 50s 1 ton Ferd on my L-112 panel, copper line suggests a home done job, but not necessarily.

got a picture?

Re: hydrovac info

What makes you think the H-vac is bad? Have you bled the brakes recently? With an H-vac system the H-vac must be bled first, before doing the wheel brakes.

I gave up on finding lit pn's a looong time ago, they no longer exist (at least for the units IH used).
I have tons of info on H-vac's which I've posted many times, including a number of rebuilders. If you'd like them all,PM me an e-mail addy and I'll send it. In all, just too much to post.
The one you have is most likely a Bendix 3rd series piston type.
It should measure > 6-3/4 dia. x 14-5/8 L (OA)

The check valve...
Is this what it looks like?

If so here's the only 3 pn's I've ever found for it.

The filter on the unit IIRC is washable and if you had yours rebuilt would (should) be included in the price.

Replace the copper with steel, copper is illegal. Hydraulic brakes lines must be steel with double flares.

If you replace any of the vacuum supply hose,it is "special" and there is NO substitute. I have Gates #'s for it. The metal line should be steel.

FYI, The lowest model (pre 60's AFAIK) that was factory built with an H-vac system is the 130. IH did have retro kits at one time though,so it's likely yours was added this way.

Re: hydrovac info

I rebuilt my Hydrovac. It wasn't hard but it was a pain to find parts. Trouble is there are a bunch of boosters all called Hydrovac some of which look quite similar but are just a little bit different inside. I ended up using whatever fit from two different kits I got off eBay. If I had to do it again I would send it to Reman and have them do it.

But Scottso's got a good point- does it even need rebuilt? My brakes were in bad shape. I ended up replacing all the lines and rebuilding the wheel cylinders because it was all packed with crusty rusty old congealed brake fluid, and I assumed the same would be true of the Hydrovac. But when I tore into it it looked pretty good and probably would have functioned fine without rebuilding.

I say hook it up and bleed it properly and try it first, then if it doesn't work send it to Reman. They can rebuild it for less than what you'll pay for parts. Remaninc.com
