Crankshaft Pully

I am stuck and you all will think I am nuts. There is a nut in front of the crankshaft pulley. It has teeth on it so that a hand crank could engage it for turning and starting it. I cant get the nut off so that I can get the pulley off. please give me advise for getting the %^*^%&#@%^ nut off...

Re: Crankshaft Pully

need a socket that fits it, and breaker bar, lock up truck in gear, or if motor is out use something to jam flywheel starter teeth, (be sure what you use isn't going to damage them)
standard regular threaded, righty tighy lefty loosie, you Can strip this bolt turning it the wrong way, don't ask how I know this,,,,,

Re: Crankshaft Pully

The parts book calls that thingee a RATCHET. If you are going to put the transmission in gear, use top gear and block the wheels. A socket is the best choice because of the coverage on the nut/ratchet. An open end wrench and/or an adjustable wrench will likely damage the nut. The socket size is 1- 5/8". You should be avle to get a cheap buy on this socket at the Nothing Made In USA store. My large sockets are 3/4" drive. If you 1/2" drive, buy an adapter for a few bucks. Your local tool rental may have these tools.
NOTE: There are two different crank shaft ratchets. One is female and the other is male. Both have normal threads.

Thanks guys. Is the pulley itself threaded on the inside?

Re: Crankshaft Pully

I would like to see a picture. I would be surprised if the crank pulley were threaded in the middle. There might be threads on the pulley to secure other accessory drives.

Re: Crankshaft Pully

No threads on the pulley , being that there is not enough space to put the woodrif key in after the pulley is on , it must be in place before the pulley goes on , can't thread it on with a key in place , right ? Was that the question

Re: Crankshaft Pully

That is the answer. This is when an appropriate pulling device is needed. If this pulley is a harmonic balancer extra care and a special puller may be required. Google for a demonstration.
I had to edit something my computer changed.

Re: Crankshaft Pully

Not sure why, but no harmonic balancer on the 220's, while they were used on the 240's and 264's. The 220 just has a solid cast pulley.

Oops. We're not looking at a 220, but something in a K or KB. Still, it doesn't look like a harmonic balancer, just a cast pulley.
