When I rebuilt my 214 back a few years ago, the instructions were incorrect. I ended up with a bad rear main leak. I did some research and found how the rear "seal" is really supposed to work. I contacted Olsen's to let them know and they sent me a free oil pan gasket since I had to drop the pan to get to the rear main bearing cap to remove the rope. Not sure if they ever updated the instructions

The only rope I put in was in the two holes on each side of the rear main. When I tore the engine down that was the only rope I found. If I am reading correctly then the pan gasket does not cover these and the rope absorbs what little oil in not returned to the pan thru the screw on the crankshaft. Does this sound right?

Ok, you're on the right track. I didn't even use the rope in the holes in the rear main cap, I used black RTV with good results. I don't remember if my pan gasket covers that part of the rear main, but I want to say it does... (I'm currently on my ship so I can't go look at my truck). Do you have a pic of what you've got going on?

I will get a picture and see if I can post it. The way mine is now Black ATV would run out because the pan gasket is only covering about 1/2 of those holes.
Thanks for all the come backs.
This site is great.

Something definitely doesn't sound right... Do you have the correct oil pan?
I RTV'd mine while it was upside down on the engine stand

So I just dug through my pics and found a few from when I rebuilt my GRD. I have a few that show the bottom end before the pan went on. It actually looks like what you're describing. It doesn't look like the pan gasket should cover the 2 holes... Hmmmm...
I wish I could just go look at my truck for you

Fairly sure it is the correct pan...I do not think the engine had ever been apart near as I could tell. I will get some pictures and see if I can post them here...may be a challenge. The dickens of it is it is all glued down but that can be fixed better to get it right now with it on a engine stand VS trying to do it back in the chassis.

Here's mine Image
It certainly looks like the pan wouldn't cover those 2 holes. I did just have a thought though... I wonder if the bottom flywheel cover covers the holes. Like I said, I really wish I could just go look at my truck!

Currently have my GRD 233 apart. Not sure if this picture will help. You can sort of see the outline of it. Not much left of my gasket.
