Mudwasp Speedo 1

Took apart the instrument cluster and found it loaded with mudwasp nests. This was the speedometer:

after using a number of dental pics I removed as much mud as possible. It was stuck solid and nothing would move. I removed the "mileage drum" and the gear that drove it. I used a hot water (not boiling) and baking soda bath and dropped th speedo in. After a few hours soaking I gently blew it dry and sprayed it with WD-40 to disperse any water left. Using a square drive I turned the speedo drive by hand. It turned easily! A bit more WD and I attached an electric screwdriver with square bit and watched the needle shaft. It worked as I thought it would. The test will be after it's connected to the speedo cable, I guess?

I have a few more tiny bit's of mud to remove but this is what it looks like (It looks much better "In person") now:

BTW: The instrument cluster light bulb and socket are missing, does anyone have a picture? Part Number? Substitute?

For the bulb and socket I think it's the same setup as on the D series. The socket has small spring tabs that pop into the hole on the lower back of the cluster.
For sockets try Restoration Supply Company https://www.restorationstuff.com/
Part number ELE238 if its a 5/8 inch hole or a ELE239 if it's a 3/4" hole.

Re: Mudwasp Speedo 1

I have been working on the Speedo face using a photo editing program. Before is on the right. It does appear that the After is smaller. As I was working I reduced the size a bit before printing. Going slowly but there are a bunch of angles, and two colors to correct.

What are you planning to print the speedometer face on? Adhesive white plastic?

I have a friend who will "print" it onto aluminum.

Just a bit more time to clean up little details then assemble it into the cluster.

Nice job!

And your post triggered an Ahha! moment for me. I was wondering why my speedo is mounted sideways, and had trouble believing it racked up 84000 miles in the 12-14 years it was driven before it was parked with a broken valve. I think someone has swapped out the speedometer unit with another. I know it's been apart before, had completely wrong screws holding the speedometer unit into the gauge cluster. Here's a picture of mine....

From what I have been seeing the Stewart Warner speedometer mechanism is fairly common for the era. You may want to check what's in there behind the black face. If you have a piece of aluminum and would like a copy of the face I cleaned up, let me know.
