Radiator

I am restoring 1946 ks7 with 269 blue diamond. Was getting the radiator checked out and the specialist said the fins are falling apart.. 675.00 to recore and clean... anyone know if this is a good price or if I can still buy this radiator and where to order one from. Thanks for responses

Re: Radiator

IIRC mine cost me $600 about 8 years ago, so sounds about right. The guy told me that the core number was still active and could still get one.

Re: Radiator

I had my KB1 radiator re-cored about 8 years ago. Cost about $300. The shop was Oshkosh Radiator in Oshkosh WI. Small old school radiator repair shop.

Re: Radiator

I'm a broken record on this...IHC radiators are amazingly long-lived. There are probably good used ones out there. I usually put a newer neck on them and a low pressure rad cap.
A "friend" shop did my last big IHC radiator for about $300. It was probably $600 worth of work.

Re: Radiator

In 1991 I had an Old School Radiator shop build a custom radiator for my R120. I wanted to maintain the same configuration as the OEM but I needed to go as wide as possible. I built a similar radiator support. That radiator was a shocking $998.00. That was 37 years ago. The engine ran cool until I stupidly mounted the AC condensor too close to the front of the radiator. The suggested clearance was one inch. I changed the clearance to 2 inches.
U" shaped frame to the original, after all, Old IHC did some things right and the radiator was one of those things. The frame isolates the radiator from the stress of fender support. I was able to get another 4 inches of width. The custom radiator had four rows of cooling versus only two OEM.
Why build a bigger and thicker radiator? The R120 had a 6.9 Diesel V8 to cool. By going custom I was able to have the hose connections where I needed them and in the sixe I needed. I built a custom fan shroud to match the 7 blade 22 inch OEM fan that came with the 6.9. The fan was mounted at 60% in and 40 % behind the shroud. That "sucker" could move air like a tornado. The hood would stress when the fan clutch locked up.
I have maybe three OEM "L" & "R" radiators over 67 years old. One radiator may have a leak under the top tank. I am having one of the OEM IHC radiators re-cored to four row for our Cummins 4bts conversion. Here is a fun note, the plastic Cummins fan matches the IHC fan shroud, precisely, like it was made to.
Today, $600 USD will buy $747.66 Canadian loonies.

Re: Radiator

Seems like the price is prob good then for the repair . It actually looked decent for the age. Just the fins were going to fall apart when cleaned. So I will prob have him repair it.. the closer I get to finishing the truck the more money I'm shelling out by far comapired to the rolling chassis and motor. All part of restoring I'm sure

Re: Radiator

The semi-gloss black paint many radiator shops use to cover a radiator may not win any awards at a show and shine. The special heat transferring ability of this paint will give a truck a better chance of arriving at the show and shine while not overheating on that one hot day.
