steering box

I am going to try and improve my trucks steering this winter. I pulled the steering box out and it looks like this. All I know is that I don't think that is a Ross Box. It has only a few really faint numbers on it. They are listed below but I am really not 100% sure of any of them......
G 30 50 0
810
W
I pulled it apart and it's all soaking in the solvent tank. I will post more pictures when I get them out. I did a little searching and the words Gemmer, Hudson, Model A and Ford F100 kept coming up and some looked fairly similar. What do you guys think it is?
It is really cold and snowy here so I have not looked at the parts truck to see what it has for a steering box.

Re: steering box

Do a search on the forum for Gemmer. Sticks in my mind that they might have been on the KB 5 trucks?

Re: steering box

IHC used Ross steering boxes. I'm trying to think of a 1930s/1940s IHC model that did not. The picture shown is NOT a Ross Box? Pretty sure!

Re: steering box

His truck is Canadian built, the Canadian ones break all the rules of the USA build,

So who knows? Stock or replaced?

Here are some more pictures. I looked at the parts truck and I think it is the same. Both trucks were made in Hamilton.

Re: steering box

Gemmer, I would think. It's already better than Ross because of the roller on the pitman shaft. Next development in line before "tube and ball".
We guys with Ross boxes dream of your box. MUCH less effort to steer w/gemmer assuming everything is in good shape.

Re: steering box

I found some great info on the web. A place called VanPelt Sales LLC has lots of info.including drawings. Read the quote below from their site.....

"From 1941 to '48 (Ford) and from 1946 to '48 (Mercury) Ford used their own manufactured version which was similar to the Gemmer 305 gearset. Some minor differences in parts occurred over the years".

I bet that is what I have and would explain the lack of info cast into the body of the unit. The number G30500 was hand punched onto it and that was all there is.

I ordered some parts from a Ford site. I am hoping they will fit. I will post when the stuff gets here.

Re: steering box

I ordered parts from Dennis Carpenter, they were under 1932 to 47 Trucks. I got the two worm gear bearings, a sector shaft seal and the two bushings. They all fit just fine although I had the ream the bushings out a bit. I will post this in the Parts section.
