KB-2 water pump rebuild

Sooo I've started on the water pump rebuild on the KB-2. The first step was to remove the bearing snap ring from behind the fan flange, next the impeller which came off (with a hydraulic press) fairly easily. The shop manual shows it being removed with an arbor press. That ain't gonna happen! I have a 20 ton arbor press trust me!. Once the impeller is off the bearing and flange are pressed out of the water pump housing (Remove the snap ring before doing this) .

Next came the flange (fan). YA! That wasn't moving at all with a 40 ton hydraulic press and heat! Over to the lathe to drill a 1/2 inch hole through the end of the shaft. The shaft is 5/8 inch.

Even with all that metal removed it was still tough going but it did press off.

Once apart it was cleaned and blasted.

I have a good source for the W/pump bearing a Federal bearing No. FB 5144 and a seal so that should be OK.

Here is the casting number and a symbol (upper right) I'm trying to decipher, a "T" "B". Any ideas on this symbol?

Why did you remove the fan flange? IIRC the bearings will come off with it in place, or at least the ones on the BLD will.

DOXIN!
Thanks for the photos and the words. I will no doubt be following your lead, one day.
A learning experience for most of us here. I've always just bought a rebuilt pump. But the GRD pumps are GONE.
Thanks for showing us!

According to the IHC manual the flange is not part of the bearing and needs to be removed. All of the water pumps I've rebuilt are the same.
(The bearing is part of the shaft / vice versa)

What is a "BLD"?

Medium duty six. The way I remember mine, after you remove the impeller and seal, the shaft with the flange come out the front and the bearings press off either way, so you could leave the fan hub in place. Its been about 15 years since I did mine, and I had to make a new shaft as the original was beyond hope. I remember I used a modern (industrial) pump seal. Bearings were common ball bearings.
I could be mistaken in my memory, but that is how I remember it.

The answer to your question is BLD is Blue Diamond.

IHC used this a lot. We have the GRD-Green Diamond in our KB's.
There was also a red diamond, blue diamond, black diamond and maybe others?

Love your clean blasted parts too!
My blast box is just about my best tool. Makes old crappy stuff look like new!

It's about 20 years old and has gotten a ton of use. Scatblaster.

Thanks

TB= Thompson Brothers Mfg? I know they made a lot of things for engines. Just a guess.

Re: KB-2 water pump rebuild

The water pump has been assembled and installed. Waiting for the distributor to become unstuck (Trying acetone and ATF for a week now). I may remove the oil pump and try pushing the distributor out. I'll have a chance to inspect the oil pump, I suppose?

More pictures later.

Water pump installed, distributor installed, engine is running very good but I need a manifold gasket. Haven't had time for pictures but will post once the manifold gasket is replaced and broken manifold bolt is replaced. Water pump no longer needs the wooden plug in the bearing vent hole. Happy.
