Charging Trouble

This gets old (and me too). I have had my old and original generator and regulator off and back on many times to get rebuilt. Finally, the regulator bit the dust and I got a new one. Did a great job and then the generator crapped out again. Bought a rebuilt one and after installing it and polarizing the regulator, it charges great--30+ amps but now the regulator won't cut in and reduce the amperage. Got another new one ordered. Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Charging Trouble

What's the voltage? If it goes to 30 amps and no higher then the current regulator is working. If the battery is below full charge then it will show a charge. SO you must know both voltage and current to assess if the regulator is working.
Do you have a good ground between the regualtor, body, chassie and engine?

Re: Charging Trouble

I don't know what the voltage is. Just before the old generator died, the regulator was working fine. Since that happened--one week ago--I had a trickle charger on the battery and when I disconnected it before installing the new generator, the charger showed a full charge. The new generator is a 30 amp unit. I believe my ground is good. It has been. Thoughts?

Re: Charging Trouble

There is no way to assess what is or isn't a problem without knowing what the system voltage is.

Zilbub,
Do you have a 6 volt battery, a 12 volt battery or possibly something else?
