F51 Transmission

I was looking at the below article and noticed that there was a transmission that offered a fifth gear overdrive, the f51. This was an option on K7 trucks.

Does anyone body know of any spare F51 transmissions on the shelf for sale?

Re: F51 Transmission

Both of mine have the OD 5th, Most of the K-7's I've ever seen have it. I wouldn't be at all suprized if yours does also.

the shift pattern is:
1-2-5
R-3-4
where as the direct is:
1-2-4
R-3-5

Re: F51 Transmission

I am not yet sure what mine is, but I was told it was a 4 speed which means it had to be an H-41. If it is a 4 speed, I would sure like to find an overdrive 5 speed.

Cornbinder, do you know the shift pattern of a 4 speed?? I would be helpful when I do get to shifting down the road!

Re: F51 Transmission

Wow! That's great news, the owner tokd me he thought it was a 4 speed. He drove it home 15 years ago and probably forgot what it was. That bit of information made my day! Just wondering, how fast will a K7 go in overdrive? In a safe manor without over reving the motor? Can it do 55, or is that too fast?

Re: F51 Transmission

In all likelyhood, the truck will not go any faster with the O/D 5th then with the direct 5th. The reason is that the O/D trans moves ALL ratios up and is used with lower (slower) rear end ratio, where as the direct has a lower ratios across the board and is used with a higher (faster) rear end.
The reason is: if you use a lower ratio rear and O/D trans, the torque in the driveline is less in lower gears and allows for a smaller driveshaft and smaller U joints, then if a direct trans and faster rear gears are used.

Re: F51 Transmission

my KB-6 has 5th od, & a high/low split rearend, it will go 55-65 on the freeway without winding the out motor, but it is a 65 year old truck and prefers to drive the surface roads,
