Maybe everyone knows this but me...I found this on Hemmings,
"The IH logo we all know and love represents a tractor viewed head-on with the operator's head represented by the dot over the "i." So initially, it represented only the agricultural side of the business.)".
Interesting, that it wasn't changed until the R series debuted in 1953.

This is often referred to as the "Man on a Tractor" logo. Correct me if wrong, but I believe this was designed by Raymond Loewy, the famed industrial designer. He also designed the original 'round' Metro body in the 1930's.

The earlier logo before the triple diamonds can be seen at the top of this building..this is the old IHC freight forwarding terminal on the Kaministiqua River(Thunder Bay On) where ships arrived via Lake Superior..here farm implements were stored for furtherance to western Canada. The building is still in use today.

Well, from what I have found while researching logos and my tractor, is that the truck division and the ag division while both part of IHC, operated somewhat separately. It wasn't until the 50's that they consolidated the logo's on their two product lines. Then, the truck division separated again, not quite sure when that occurred.

Here is a link to what I stumbled onto while researching for the mudflaps I bought:
