Excessive oil pressure..Help!!

Hi all, engine is a GRD 214. I just finished rebuilding it and fired it for the first time. I installed a known good mechanical oil pressure gauge for the startup. After a bit of coaxing, it lit off and gradually built oil pressure, but it didn't stop. It wrapped the 100 psi gauge alll the way around, then blew the gasket out of the oil filter canister. I removed the oil pressure relief plunger just to try it and got the same result. The gauge is hooked up to the stock sender location on the passenger side. The oil filter is hooked up to the ports on the driver side. I assembled the engine, but I had my machine shop bake, blast, and clean the block so it was ready for assembly. What the heck is going on here??!? Could someone please explain the oiling system of a 214?

They weren't getting any oil over to the filter side. Plus, like I said, the whole thing was baked, blasted, and cleaned. I can't imagine an oil galley or passage would be plugged...

A little tight on the clearances? Gotta be a reason. Last guy had plugged passages. The oil pressure relief valve is the final control. Sounds like something is blocking the oil pressure relief. A gasket. Debris.

That makes sense... Clearances are perfect though, .0020 on the mains and .0018 on the rods. How does the oiling system work? From the pump, where does it go first, then where, etc etc. Trying to figure out where I might have a blockage.

I'd have to dig up an old Motor's Manual.

Well, I got it figured out. It was assembly error on my part. When I assembled the engine I put a pipe plug in the oil drain line from the relief valve. Oops..lol. I saw it was tapped NPT, so I figured a plug went there..apparently not. It was probably close to six months from the time I disassembled the engine until I put it back together so I forgot how it was supposed to be. I dropped the pan, removed the plug and installed a pipe nipple to direct the overflow to the bottom of the pan. Now she's got 25 psi at idle hot, and builds to 55 psi at speed. All good now :yay:

Almost always something simple. I know your pain. Glad that you got it figured out.
