Ebrake adjustment

The service manual says that there should be .01 to .015 in clearance between the lining and the drum when the brake is in the forward position (not engaged). Any good way to measure this? I hate to say it, but printer paper is about .004" thick so I folded it over three times giving me .012" and I slid that in between lining and drum-looking for more accurate suggestions. After proper adjustment, is it realistic to expect the truck not to roll at all on a 30 degree incline? I know this would be my expectation of my 2011 Camry-not sure if I am expecting too much. Thoughts?

Re: Ebrake adjustment

Are you talking about wheel brakes or the ebrake drum behind the trans?

Re: Ebrake adjustment

for an e-brake, adjusted right,(I use a feeler gauge, the flat kind) it should hold the vehicle for a short period of time on that incline. I trust my park brake, but what if it failed. That is why I always block my wheels when my vehicle is on an incline. My son learned that lesson the hard way, and my neighbor across the street got new garage doors.

Re: Ebrake adjustment

I chased a F-350 out the shop door with a wheel chock in my hand.
Thought for sure it would kill school children, workers, employees, etc.
Crushed me between the cab and shop door.
Broke one arm and several ribs.
Broken ribs are a biatch!
If you notice my posts always say chock the wheels. Safety first.

Re: Ebrake adjustment

I understand the idea that you should block the wheels as a precaution-and I agree. Let me be more clear-I adjusted the ebrake last night. It holds better than it did before, but it still wants to roll when the brake is applied-especially when parked facing uphill. It is realistic to think that when properly adjusted it should be able to hold the vehicle? Do I need to go back and readjust or is this as good as it's going to get?

I really appreciate all the feedback everyone has given.

Re: Ebrake adjustment

I'm gonna guess it's the drum behind the trans.
Three ton Imperials used this system because that early auto trans had no park position.
Imagine chasing one of those down a hill!
Short answer is that it should keep your truck from rolling, yes.
However, they are abused, left on while driving, etc.
Did you look to see if the drum and shoes are glazed?
If they're glazed then no matter how you adjust they won't hold very well.
Did you inspect?

Re: Ebrake adjustment

IF the lineing is not worn out, the drum not covered in oil, they should lock the rear wheels AT 30 MPH easy, holding on a grade should be no problem.
There is more then one adjustment on band style parking brakes, both adjustments must be right for it to work well. Read and follow the procedure in a manual.

Re: Ebrake adjustment

The lining and drum are good shape. Is the lining like a brake pad where it should have a minimum thickness or replace? I believe there are 3 points of adjustment and I have attempted to adjust each point to allow .01 to .015" clearance. I plan to get back in their this weekend and tweak.
