Tranny slips out of 4th Gear

I believe I saw a post years ago before this site was hacked (the second time) where someone couldn't keep their tranny in gear. I can drive about a block or 2 in 4th before it pops out. It is worse driving down hill. I have a KB-1. 4th gear is so close to neutral position. Thanks.

I guess one of the shift forks could be worn or loose causing high gear not to be fully engaged.
In high gear there's no torque multiplication through countershaft, mainshaft is locked up from input to output shaft.
A lot of times popping out of gear is caused by chipped gear teeth.
It's not that much trouble to pull off floor board and remove trans top cover.
I guess I'd put trans in high gear before pulling off lid and then look if it's fully engaged on the main shaft.
Look for chipped and missing teeth, too.
Put a magnet in the bottom of the case and see what you can fish out.

Have you heard any wining or grinding noises? It is also possible that the input brg is worn and is popping it out of gear to. worn input could be caused by bad pilot brg letting frt of input shaft droop, wearing out the brg.

Not trying to scare you, just another possibility.

time to upgrade to a synchronized T-98 instead of that old tranny?

they don't call em a crashbox for nothing,

probably worn out, you may be lucky and it is the shifter fork bent, but once you straighten it, your gonna eventually have problems again, if it is the fork and not bearing or gear itself,

my buddy's truck used to pop out of 3rd gear all the time so he put a bungee cord from the dash, and when he was pulling a grade in 3rd he'd slip the bungee on shifter,

it kept it in gear, maybe a bungee from the seat up to 4th?

Is a T98 4 speed a direct swap from a stock 4 speed in a 42 K-2? and are they synchronized transmissions?

you have to turn the throat collar on the tranny down about a 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch to fit in the bell housing, and shorten the driveline an inch or so,,,,

but otherwise a pretty direct swap, and yes, synchronized, except first gear and reverse,

At least this was MY experience with installing a T-98 out of a 60s IHC pickum up into my 1949 KB-1 with original 4 speed in it. your results may vary

make sure I understand also, the bell will be from the T-9 and will bolt up to the t-98 trans after you turn the throat collar down and a possible shortening of the drive line.

there was a lot of fighting over this before, BUT again, what I'm saying is leave the existing engine GRD 214 or 233 intact to it's bell housing,

I want to avoid a s***t storm over the re-centering a bellhousing war again,,,like last time I posted this info.

drop your driveline, remove the T-9 tranny, take the throat collar off the T-98 have turned down to fit diameter of GRD bellhousing hole, put collar back on tranny,

tranny will/should bolt right up to bellhousing that WAS NOT removed from the engine,

then measure up driveline, have it shortened to fit, you MAY need to use yoke off tranny and have it put to end of driveline, so if you can get the tranny with yoke on it if possible, I don't specifically remember if yoke had to be swapped, I've done a lot of swaps , and I did the T-98 into KB-1 probably 20yrs. ago if not more.

So for Brier47Binder , If this is a route you are thinking about, find a t98 tranny and proceed. Contact me, I may have one, but am in Idaho.
