Spark plug extension

The '47 KBS-6 I'm restoring had these extensions on the spark plugs:

What is the purpose of the extension? The OD threads of the plug and extension look to be the same, but I didn't measure them. The truck had a corn sheller mounted on it for most of its working life. I also noticed that the distributor timing was advanced as far as it would go (about 12 degrees BTDC.)

The other '47 KBS-6 that we're using as a donor parts truck doesn't have these extensions.

Re: Spark plug extension

Spark plug extenders lengthen the path to the cooling jacket. They are meant for old (low compression) oil burning engines that should be rebuilt. They can cause detonation and preignition and should only be used as a last resort.

Re: Spark plug extension

Thanks for the info! I've already rebuilt the engine, so I'll just store those extensions away somewhere.
