rear axle end play

So I got the rear axle back and re-installed on the KB1. Im ready to install the backing plates and was reading up on the end play of the axle shafts. I read that correct end play is achieved by shimming one side only. When I took the backing plates off there were shims on both sides. Does it matter one side vs both? Since the axles were re-used and not replaced should I just install the shims where they were? Or if I start over whats the easiest way to get the end play correct?
