Re: 1926 S-26 IHC Custom

Until recently, these old shafts were available locally in Fresno at Romo's Auto Wrecking. They had antique driveshafts stacked like firewood.
I saved as much of it as I could. I grabbed every red set of Mechanic's U Joint shafts I saw. :)
Unfortunately, the City if Fresno was on a "Keep America Clean" thing about ten years ago and forced Romo's out of business. They still have tow trucks, though. Including antique ones. :)
I bought what parts I could afford.
I was hoping Romo's would attain "Historic" status having been open for 90 years, but no.
Short-sighted morons!
It just looked like JUNK to The City.
Seriously, you really have to have an eye out EVERYWHERE, now. Ebay. Craigslist.
I just saw a 90 year old hard rubber dual tread truck tire out out by a mailbox in Dinuba. I'm going to grab it.

The main dif bearing is almost destroyed, wouldn't have gone a mile or 2 before it crashed and burned. There's only a little piece left of the inner housing that holds the bearings in place.

Re: 1926 S-26 IHC Custom

So far this is the bearing numbers I've found and matched for the 1926 International S-26 model.

Front Hub Bearing Inner- Timken Race 532, Bearing 536 (1 set per side).
Rear Axle inner at Ring Gear- Timken 3720 Race, 377 Bearing (1 set per side).
Rear Axle Outer at Hub- Timken Race 32310-90KA1, Timken X32310 418 ISOClass France FJ2801 Bearing (1 set per side).
Rear Diff Pinion Gear large Outer- New Departure 5309 Bearing, New one is SKF 3309A (one unit).
Rear Diff Pinion Gear Small Inner- New Departure 1306 Bearing, New one is SKF 6306 (one unit).
Steering Box- Matthews Manufacturing Co 610 1/4 V, New one is Nice USA 610 1/4 V (2 units, one upper and one lower in housing).

Transmission-
Top Shaft Front- New Departure 1310 Bearing, New one is SKF 6310 (one unit).
Top Shaft Rear- New Departure 1307 Bearing, New one is SKF 6307 (one unit).
Bottom Shaft Front- New Departure 1305 Bearing, New one is SKF 6305 (one unit).
Bottom Shaft Rear- New Departure 1306 Bearing, New one is SKF 6306 (one unit).
Trans shaft to motor- New Departure 7205 Bearing, New one is SKF 7205 (one unit).
Throw Out Bearing- Unknown, Still trying to match up. Manufacturer is still in business but does not make that bearing anymore (one unit).

Looks like New Departure is out of business, SKF has the replacement parts to match.

once done, would you be kind enough to post this in the parts section for the early trucks? Thank you.

Re: 1926 S-26 IHC Custom

Cleaned and installed new bearing in the Transmission. It should be good for another 90 years.

The old bearings weren't too bad but its best to replace before installing and painting everything. I originally cleaned it all and made new gaskets, later decided to do it right and replace the bearings. The $200 it cost for the bearings is cheaper than being stranded on the read somewhere.

The gears did not have any wear, chips or fractures.

Everything moves smooth and rolls easily.

I did not change the bearing inside the upper split shaft (shown on the first and second photo), my supplier said it was still in good shape.

So I'm counting two gears plus direct equals three gears and no synchros?
A very robust transmission, I would say.

Wouldn't need much more than that on the farm in the old days, much stronger and faster than the Horses.

Re: 1926 S-26 IHC Custom

Replaced the Pinion Gear Bearings, not too bad a process with the right pullers.

The main (larger bearing) was almost ready to spit out the bearings from the housing, not much of the retainer was left.
No cracks, chips or wear on all the gears. Just a lot of cleaning involved. Got it all back into the housing and ready to install, just need to make the gaskets and waiting on the bearings to hold the spider gears in place.
