Re: C35 'pickup'

I'll check the local library, they might have a Motors Manual.

On to the wheelbase issue. Last week my son came over - we've been discussing the pro/con of cutting the frame vs moving the brackets. Utimately decided it would be better/easier to move instead of cut. So after a couple of days of drilling out rivets we have a 140" WB. Since the frame got deeper as it goes forward, we had to cut a groove to fit the front bracket, and fabricate a support. I want to keep the original frame height or possibly lower it. May remove some spring leaves.

Looks more like a pickup frame now :D

Re: C35 'pickup'

YES!
Air hammer wake up the fam?
Hilarious!
I like that idea best.
I've shortened frames by moving mounts (rather than cut frame) on: 1933 IHC B-3, 1935 Chevy 1.5 ton, 1934 Ford 1.5 ton, 1938 IHC D-30, 1945 IHC K-7.
My kids have complained about the racket. Just so funny.
How are your pins and bushings? It's all fun until you realize all those spring shackles are TOAST.
Best of luck!
It's like watching ME. FUN.

Re: C35 'pickup'

Didn't use my air hammer, but made plenty of noise with a 4# and drift punch. Wasn't as bad as I thought, although having help makes a lot of difference! Bushings were all shot, but only the shackle pins on front are bad. Not nearly as shot as my '39 Dodge - had to replace the brackets on that one, plus the very strange shackles! Trying to get the bushings out of the spindles today but there's not much room to work with the backing plates riveted on. Might have to split the bushings with an air saw.

Re: C35 'pickup'

I've been cleaning parts, mostly sheet metal. Built a temporary tank (60"x50"x11") out of 2x6's and pond liner, added 50# CAP and 100 gallons of water. Only takes ~24 hrs to remove surface rust. The first photo below shows parts directly out of the tank, hosed off with a garden hose. The rust just goes away. Second photo is after a few minutes sanding w/100 grit.

On another note, I'm looking for a couple of rim clamps, one front, one rear. I found a source for the front clamp (left in photo) but haven't had any luck with the rear (right side in photo). Anyone have a part number or source for these?

Re: C35 'pickup'

I googled CAP. How much does 50# cost and where did you buy it? How do you dispose of the waste dip?
I have a coffee can full of those clamps (probably). I've owned two B-3s, three or four C-30s and two or three D-30s. I have many of those axles hanging around.
Your progress is awesome!
Your focus is so much better than mine.
I have a C-30 SRW truck. My current plan is to use the cab on my IHC C-1 pickup project.
The C-30 chassis (being single cast rear wheels) looks VERY close to 1939- Mack ED "pickups".
I plan to use that 1939 Mack cab and sheetmetal I just got as a wannabe Mack ED. Crazy? Probably.
Rock on, Mike!

Re: C35 'pickup'

Hey Don, I got the citric acid at bulkapothecary.com, it was about $70 with shipping. Close to 1/2 the cost of anywhere else I could find. It's a food grade powder, very user friendly. No problem putting your hands in it, and also non-toxic, so you can dump it anywhere when you're finished using it. The guy I got the idea from used a batch to de-rust 4 entire car bodies before it was used up.

On the rim clamps, Van Horn Truck Parts list the front clamps at $3.49 for 10! Cheap enough, but with shipping it will be over $10 and I only need 1 clamp. CB, the front clamp uses a 1/2"bolt, and the rear uses a 5/8" carriage bolt. If someone will send me one in a padded envelope I'll send you $5. No hurry for these, I don't even have tires yet! Saving my pennies - CokerTire has 30x5's for $230 each with tube and flap. With shipping that's going to be over $1500 yikes.

I like the Mack pickup idea, those are rare trucks! As far as being focused, it's a lot easier since I don't work at a 'real' job anymore. I just try to get a little something done everyday. Just getting into the shop is motivation, and I usually end up putting in 4 hours per day.

Can't post without at least one picture, here's a shot of my wheels. Not sure about the color yet, maybe something with a little more of a bronze look.
