Re: C35 'pickup'

Thanks for the comments, I'm glad folks are checking this out as I'm going to have lots of questions before this truck hits the road again! Don, you're right, the bed will be critical. I'm thinking of building a bed since it's going to be BIG. Funny, I was looking at a couple of front fenders off my '40 Ford Commercial, but they're too 'modern' looking for this truck.

BlindSquirrel, speaking of suspension, when I took the front axle out I noticed that the front spring packs are different sizes - same length but one has thicker springs than the other, and the u-bolts were not fully engaged. Maybe off a C-40?

Cirvan, that floor is the best wood in the truck! Almost everything else is shot.

Nikki, believe it or not, I was able to salvage the 'flaps' from those tires. After struggling with the first tire, I finally figured out the 'trick' and got rid of the shredded tires. Also removed the rear view mirror after whacking my head 3 or 4 times :t0119:

One of the first things I worked on was the front bumper. The spring steel was broken into 3 pieces. Probably won't hold up too well so I'll have to be careful not to run into stuff!

A few pix after cleaning up:

Re: C35 'pickup'

I thnk brighad built a bed, including flare boards, out of wood. Very old timey!
The dual rear wheels means that the bed floor will need wheel tubs. I collect them just for this reason. :)
There ARE longer versions of the "sheetmetal shop" style original C series bed out there. I think Dodge used a very similar bed. I'll take pictures of what I mean.
For rear fenders I suggest sectioning D-30, 35, K-6, 7 front fenders to work. Just my opinion. That's what I did.

Re: C35 'pickup'

Just so I know. What is the etiquette here in someones build-off thread? In my head I'm thinking that sticking to related comments and questions (and or request for pictures) to the build seems appropriate. But I don't want to ruffle any feathers not knowing if there is any sort of boundary to the box on a build thread. Yes, I read the forum rules.

To bad you didn't have this a bit sooner. Your not that far from me and my neighbor just milled me a ton of dimensional lumber to replace my entire stake bed. Cost me $120. But I'm posting my build to wordpress

Etiquette, what's that? :)

Mike, that wheel screams "trouble". I love old IHCs but these wheels, OY! I usually end up cutting the rotten tires off. Just really heavy, rusty, nasty work.

Re: C35 'pickup'

Yes Don, the wheels are pretty rough. I cut the first tire off, what a hassle. Then I figured out how it's supposed to be done! Once I get the rust off I'll see if there's anything left :)
As far as fenders go, that's a LONG way down the road, but I'm thinking of something more like an early 30's style, maybe use trailer fenders to work with.
BlindSquirrel, all comments are welcome! I've noticed several threads here sometimes go off track. Not a big deal to me.

First step in deconstruction was to remove the floor. The floor boards themselves were in good shape, but the sill pieces were not so good, the passenger side was almost gone, looks more like sawdust than wood. Driver side a little better, but rotted out in front and back.

Re: C35 'pickup'

I made a C-30 cab floor (sills and strictural items) from electrical conduit and steel plate. Trying to match hole location was tough! I think I got, though.
Have you googled or searched for C Series floor diagrams?
I did all my stuff prior to my having an ipad. No pictures.

Re: C35 'pickup'

I haven't looked for diagrams. I'm planning to use 1-1/2" square tubing for the cab structure. I'd go with wood but I'm just not much of a cabinet maker. I'll use wood in some areas, we'll see what happens. When I got this truck the passenger door wouldn't close, due to having NO door jamb, and no structural wood at the rear panel. Here's a shot of the driver side.

Re: C35 'pickup'

Removed the steering column. The steering box is one of the very cool parts on this truck, even has a serial# - I guess folks were proud of what they built in those days. Did some repair work on the steering wheel. I used JB Weld after opening the cracks up. Looks better I think, hope it holds up.
