Motor oil

I'm in the process of getting the head on my 51 international milled and the valves replaced. Are there better oils that could be used on these older motors?

Any motor oil today is better than what they had in the 50's. Since you are this far into the engine consider dropping the pan and cleaning it out. Then run any good modern oil. I use Shell rotilla in my 269.

These old motors have flat cam followers like a Cummins. 15-40 works really well. Buy the lowest price 15-40 oil and save money. All oils come from the big producers. Bulk oil is packaged with any label the seller asks for.
I was buying Walmart brand and saved 30%.

Thanks for the info. I did clean out the oil pan and was surprised at the amount of slug that was in it, who knows if it was ever cleaned. I've changed the oil a few times and am hoping that after the head gets reinstalled that the oil will stay cleaner.

The oil will not stay cleaner. There is an aftermarket spin-on oil filter kit designed for these bypass Systems. The kit has the proper restriction fitting. While not OEM, I like the look of someone thinking about making something new work in an old design. I'm out and on my BlackBerry. I will post a link when I get home.

I like Shell Rotella for older motors myself. The higher zinc content that Rotella has is not found in a lot of the other modern off the shelf oils. I run it in my diesel tractor and the synthetic version in several of my motorcycles too. The new ( to me) motor that will be going into my S truck will get Rotella. I'll clean the pan and most likely stay with the bypass filter, that arrangement worked well for years in my last IH truck.

I found what I was looking for. This is another option, for the person who thinks they need it.
