Rims

Hi all does anyone know what other type of 16 steel rims will fit a 1951 L110. One of my rims got damaged and my spare is not usable. Thanks

Re: Rims

Be aware of wheel backspacing! Jeep Cherokee/Comanche wheels have too much offset, and won't clear.

Just because they have the right bolt pattern, it doesn't mean they'll clear tie rods and other "obstacles."

Re: Rims

I can say from experience that the Ford rims Bedrockjon suggested will work.

Giulio, you should just start a build thread to keep all of your information in one place :)

Re: Rims

Some real-world observations on my L-110:

16x5 IHC rims with 2.75" backspace and 7.50-16 tires (about 31" diameter) fit well and clear the fenders, tie rods, etc. Highway tread on front and lugs on the rear.

15x5 IHC rims with 3.75" backspace (from a junkyard 1960's truck) with a 7.00-15 highway tire (about 29" diameter) rub on the front inner fenders at full turn. With a 7.00-15 traction tire (about 9" wide), they rub the rear inner fender (bed).

So, it seems to me it's less about clearing the tie rods than the inner fenders. Consequently, the more backspacing you add to the rim, the less your tire diameter can be on the front, or the less wide it can be on the rear.

I've searched the aftermarket rim places. As far as off-the-shelf items go, I'd pick a 16x4.5 rim with about 2.5-3.0" backspace, very close to the stock IHC 16x4. Most of the wider rims (6-7") have the extra width on the frame side, as opposed to the hubcap side like the stock 16x5" IHC. You can special order reverse or deep dish rims but that'll cost extra.

1940s and early 1950's Mopar 16" car wheels fit our trucks and I've seen more than a few with them. Usually fairly narrow, like 4 to 4.5" wide.

Re: Rims

BTW, a secondary observation: If the tire/wheel combination won't fit on the spare tire carrier, it probably will rub on something when mounted. Purely empirical, but I'm standing by it.
