Re: 1955 R-110 Cummins Swap

Little bit of an update... everything's going good so far, I've got a little over 3k miles on the swap. I also finished my gauge pod too, its a nice custom touch. I will be doing the Dana 30 front axle swap here in a few weeks, and we picked up two more 4bts and one is inter-cooled. Ill pulling all the intercooling parts needed from that one and swap them with ones from my motor. (Like injectors and intake.)Then one 4bt will being going into my brothers kb2 and other into a 80's ford 150 for my dad.

Man, Monty, that makes a really cool truck! And you seem to be able to make serious changes so quickly, I am in awe!

Not to knit-pick, but just a suggestion, there are stainless steel cable ties that would maybe look more finished and be just as handy. I'm sure they are more expensive (we get them at work where I don't pay the bill).

Keep us up to date!

Thanks! I do tend to work quickly. And if you noticed the cable ties holding the EGT and boost gauge, that was just holding them until the expoy dried. I didnt feel like holding them there. LOL

Re: 1955 R-110 Cummins Swap

Well about 5 weeks ago i pulled the front clip off to start mounting the inter-cooler into the nose of Ole' Monty. Had to do a little bit of chopping though, so I have have so sheet metal work to do. Then about two weeks ago I pulled the intake plate off the 4bt to put the inter-cooler one on, which has a 2.75" tube vs. the 2 inch original. Once I had the intake back together it was time to mock the inter-cooler pipes.
After some cutting and welding I had my pipes all in there. After about hundred miles of driving it intercooled I say it was worth it, it cleared up almost all of the smoke, added about 25+ HP, and dropped my EGTs 200 degrees! :yay: Also it lots awesome with that inter-cooler tucked behind the grill. Then the day after Easter i noticed oil splattered all over the bottom of the truck, after some inspecting i found that the rear main seal bit the dust. So i spent the day pulling the transmission, flywheel, etc. And wow, the person who put the old seal in did not know what they were doing, it wasn't even in the housing all the way. Not to mention it was angled in the hole, so it wasn't close to touching the crank! So I got seal in correct way and is good, execpt for a slight leak, cause when you remove the rear main housing it pulls up some of the pan seal. I do think it is the rear part of the oil pan seal because the slight oil drip isn't coming from inside the bell housing, its coming from the outside of the bell where the oil pan is, also all the rear oil pan bolt heads have little drips on them. While i had the transmission out i made a new down pipe that flowed better, while doing so, i decided to go to a 4 inch exhaust. Talk about a difference in sound, it sounds like a 6bt! Lastly I sanded down my rims because they where getting rusty and painted them black.

Re: 1955 R-110 Cummins Swap

When doing a rear main on its big brother (855) I use a razor to separate the pan gasket from the rear main plate, then when going back lay a bead of RTV at the block/plate/pan jct and a little gasket sealer on the exposed pan gasket.
855's the seal is a TLDL (Teflon lay down lip) type seal and has to be expanded to get over the crank, the seal comes with a plastic expander to get the seal on the crank without damage. The seal also has to be installed to correct depth, and there is a special tool but I found an old axle shaft flange with the shaft cut off works just as well.
The seals for the 855 are directional as well, different seal for left and right rotation, I wouldn't be surprised that the same all hold true for its little brother.

Re: 1955 R-110 Cummins Swap

If you ever think you might like to move the battery to another location, this is what we did with our L110 Shorty. If you ever think you might like to install a different furl tank of put a second tank in another location, this is what we did. The tank I/we are using is a 1990 Chevy Van tank. The tank fits between the rear rails after a little trimming on the lower flange flange.
Your work look really good.
My friend installs the Cummins 5,9, 24 valve in the "L" models. There is enough room without cutting the IHC to fit. The 24 valve is about 500 pounds heavier.

I didnt have any RTv on Hand at the time and i was under a time crunch to get back on the road. But i have to change the oil here in the next couple weeks, so ill do the pan gasket then. As for the cranks seal, i bought the one that came with the install tool, which made life easy. It had a flange on it so you couldn't press the seal in to far.

I like were you put that battery its a good safe spot. I probably wont be getting a different fuel tank though, I kind of like were it is now and I can run awhile on a full tank. I think what i might do is get another IH L,R, or S tank weld the neck shut and put it behind the passenger side running board and then tie the two tanks together. With 30 gallons of fuel i should be able to go to Kansas and back on one tank. Though when i started the swap i thought of going to a rear tank so i could get rid of the running boards.

Re: 1955 R-110 Cummins Swap

Check in with lbesq on this forum. I know he has a right side factory option fuel tank that will fit your truck.
I have a few extra L&R tanks. I was thinking the filler could be moved.
I bought a new 24 valve Cummins for my last project truck. This engine will be going into an "R" . The "L" grill leaves more room for intercoolers etc.
The Cummins 4bta has lots of power. A friend of mine had a Willys with a 4bta and he pulls an Airstream double axle trailer and keeps up with traffic while getting 25mpg on the I-5. My friend's 4bt has an NVG4500 transmission. I/we are using a TH475 automatic and an NVG241c transfercase for 4X4.
I appreciate the work you do.
