Leaking oil sender

The only oil weep from my SD 240 is the oil sender
it does not appear from the threaded connection at the block
any ideas? On how to seal,

have not removed it but would like ideas short of replacing it
for now I hose clamped a rag around it and ring it out one every
other time out, no biggie just thought I would ask
maybe a sealant of a recommended type around the crimping if thats the issue,

Thanks

Re: Leaking oil sender

I used to use apply a BFH. The leak stopped, but any chance of the sender ever working again was gone. The most likely cause of the leak is the Bourdon tube. It moves continuously when the engine is running and changing rpm. If the leak is at the Bourdon tube connection to the gauge, you might be able to resolder the connection.do not heat the Bourdon Tube. Apply yhr heat to the tube that exits the gauge. Flush to very clean with brake-clean or solder will not stick.

I hope you are doing well.

Re: Leaking oil sender

Its the pressure sender
directly plumbed into the block 3/8 brass nipple
single wire connection . works fine
have a hunch it leaks around the crimping to the base of the sender,
was thinking of spreading some type of RTV once cleaned to see if that dose it,

Tube and blub type can sensor, small round right on engine next to the distributor

Thanks

Re: Leaking oil sender

Any gauge of that vintage will most likely have the Bourdon tube system. It is also very likely the crimped body is nothing more than a dirt, moisture and dust cover for the Bourdon Tube and linkage. Google images of Bourdon Tube to understand.
If you are able to totally seal the cover, the leak will equalize the pressure inside and outside the Bourdon Tube and the sender will fail to modulate.

Re: Leaking oil sender

He has an electric gauge, more likely a diaphragm and resistor card than a tube and gear. I'd remove the sender and goop the threads, just to make sure it isn't that. If the sender is leaking internally I don't think there is much hope of a field fix. Just my 2 pennies worth.

I know its going to be a bit cheesy but I will put on some gloves and spread some gasket type RTV on the back side
and let it cure , what the heck it may work , I'll make it neat , its a very small weep of oil leaking ..

Thanks for the reply,,

Yep thats the style,
Mine works fine just leaks around the crimped inter edge.

I had some Permatex Optimum gasket maker and fingered in
a good amount on the back side covering all the seams and wiped it
clean so its looks hi-potted :) It should cure and I will give it a test run tomorrow,

The small leak on the shop floor is irritating me and I don’t like changing his diaper
so will see..

and Yes I am frugal , especially now being close to fully relaxed :) AKA retired ,

Be safe gentlemen.. Cheers

The Permatex Optimum setup nicely..

I will put a clean diaper around it again and see if it stays dry.
So far looks promising :)

All is well in my shop hope the same for you all ,
