Re: Sol's '54 R112

So when I hacked out the old fire wall to fit that big ass ford engine, I at least kept most of the pieces. Other than needing a bump out on the drivers side for the intake manifold, most of it will be stock again. A lot of unnecessary work I made for myself by having to piece it back together but it'll look better than what I had.

The 2JZ runs 3 coils in a wasted spark configuration from the factory. The coils are pretty weak output wise and folks have issues with them when adding a turbo. The aftermarket computer I will be running has outputs to run individual coils and the most popular option is factory GM "LQ9" coils as the are very powerful, easily available, and cheap. I bought 8 used ones for $50. Next is making brackets to hold them to the engine. Companies make these but they are way too expensive IMO for what you get. Enter a new toy of mine, Mr 3D printer. I measured what I needed, drew them up in a CAD program and printed them out. The plastic I printed these in is low temp so they won't survive in this location. I may try a different plastic type or just use these brackets as templates for aluminum plates.

Got the firewall pieced back together and I am much happier with it now than it was with the ford v8. Other than a bump out on the drivers side for the intake manifold, the firewall/floor with be mostly stock again.

At some point in the last 65 years someone else had hacked out a hole in the firewall. I do not own a bead roller so this piece took quite a while to make by hand.

Great workmanship, Joe. You're going to have a very unique, practical, and reliable Truck. Thanks for the update. Very cool.

Nice work! I'm enjoying following your progress on this. I vote using the 3d printed parts as templates to make aluminum brackets.

Probably someone want to replace the core plug on the back of the engine without pulling it.

Re: Sol's '54 R112

Stuck the green craigslist fenders and the grill back on so I could get a better feel for how the engine bay was working out. Also wanted to see how the radiator, condenser, and intercooler were going to sit.

Image

Lots of room for a fan/shroud (I can move the rad another inch or two forward yet, this is just resting on the edge of the factory crossmember)

Image

Hmm, could have gone a little wider on the intercooler to fill out the opening better. Oh well.
