Re: 1952-L110 Shorty.

Thanks, SG. How is your project doing?
The MARSON thread insert tool was $30 dollars on CL. The seller said that it was seized and probably good for parts, only. The #39200 nose piece had stopped turning because the lube had dried. Magihc WD40 to the rescue and the function returned. A tiny bit of NEVERSIEZE on the threads and it is good to go. I now have two of these tools. they will be very handy on the L110 build-up. I like to use socket head button screws to hold the dashboard and the above windshield covers in place. I find the "riv-nut" system very handy for power window installation. I inverted them to act a location pins with securing screws for the area behind the rear seats, on our '40 Ford, where the speakers will go. I used "riv-nuts) thread inserts to hold carpeted inserts to the indented area in the left and right kick panels on the R120 we used to have. This area is a good speaker location. The applications are only limited by one's imagination.

Re: 1952-L110 Shorty.

I had a late start and a quiet day in the shop. It rained all day and the heat was on and the door closed. I cut up some material and made a good start on the replacement pins for the rear suspension. the shackle components are done. Before I can finish them I need to buy a 5/8" and a 1.5 inch rotary broaches. I guess that I could jerk around with a die grinder, but, that isn't going to happen. Anyway, here are a few pictures.

Carefully bending the material for the rear shackles. Now the real work on the shackles begins, tomorrow. As often happens, while I was bending the last piece, I came up with a better idea. Too late, I'm not doing it again.

Re: 1952-L110 Shorty.

Shop time was short today. After a two hour trip in the country to check on another project vehicle and drop off some parts for panting, I tried to get something done on this L. I was shaping a carbide cutter for the lathe. I made several trips to the grinder, which I left running. I had just turned my back when there was an explosion and the grinding wheel had blown-up. the wheel can be replace and is not too expensive. The guard had saved certain injury and the up-side is, the motor shaft is not bent. The MADE IN USA, BALDOR grinder survived, showing that there is not substitute for buying quality

Re: 1952-L110 Shorty.

I got z slightly late start, today, because I had to run a few errands. I got a 5/8" annular of CRAIGSLIST for $30 and then the reality check at the machine shop supply, the 1-1/2" annular cutter was $156. But these cutter do such nice work.

Re: 1952-L110 Shorty.

And now for the frame mounted spring perches/brackets. Every one of the original brackets had been damaged and the pins were terribly corroded. It should be said that these brackets may have come from several parts trucks. Parting out the pickups that may not be worth saving can contribute to saving another truck being saved. I don't know if I should worry, but my wife was out for a look and said, "cute". I know that she was not talking about me. I am rough as a badger, curse like a sailor and might be wind-blown and just a little interesting, on a good day.

Re: 1952-L110 Shorty.

Now, on to the spring over conversion for the front DANA 44. So-far-so-good. Both front and rear axles should be ready for a first test fit later tomorrow. If we have time, we might go and look at some wheels and tires. Unfortunately, the RAM 17 inch wheels we had intended to use have way too much positive off-set and clearance is a big issue. I am thinking that GEOLANDER 265-70/R17 will fill the big fenders and give the L110 a bit of a rubber pavement roller. The larger tires could be a rubber ratio changer, for us. The Cummins 4bta should be able to push the pickup down the road easily with the 3:31 axle gearing and the larger tires.
We tried using a hole saw in the milling machine for a look-see. I am surprised at how well it works. I am guessing the mill is more stable than a drillpress. I cant help but think that a much less expensive holesaw may have adequate for our needs, making the big annular cutter less necessary.
