Re: '55 R-122 rehab

After spending this morning rebuilding the ford 8.8" rear end and getting confirmation from the driveshaft shop that I would get a quick turn around I decided to disable truck and start to swap the rear end this afternoon.

The axle is a 31 spline 3.73 gear unit with disc brakes and a trac lok diff. I installed new axle bearings and seals, new parking brake shoes, new rotors, calipers, and pads. To top it all off I installed the carbon fiber trac lok rebuild kit. It's reported to be more durable and have a higher break away torque rating.

Next day off I'll swap in the T19 trans so that I can measure for the driveshaft modification and then start on the front brakes and master cylinder. I'm already eagerly awaiting the first drive after these mods are complete.

What angle did you set your spring perches at on the 8.8?

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

The number is a moot point as the truck is on an incline, but I matched the output flange on the trans with the input flange on the axle. My value was 4*. As long as the flanges are on different planes (within reason) and the angles match your U-joints should be happy.

Driveshaft is in. Custom weldments are attached to axle for the rear brake line "Tee" and the rear disc brake soft lines. Rear tires have been swapped onto the new reversed low backspace rear rims. Looking forward to working on the front brakes and M/C this weekend.

Look at that dish... Kinda makes it look hot rod-ish.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Been busy taking care of some little items. I think my brake pedal pumper was a little too enthusiastic and entrained some air into the brake fluid as the pedal feels a bit spongy. I'll let it sit for a few days and try to bleed it again with a power bleeder and see how it goes. I also need to get an intermediate P-brake cable and fab up an adapter to go from the IH cable to a fold cable. It'll be a temporary solution as the IH cable is damaged and will need to be replaced before winter. I will have a custom front cable made to attach to the IH handle and the ford int. cable. Otherwise I believe I am ready to test out the rest of my new bits n bobs.

I also found time today to install the Reese hitch I bought a few years back for this truck. It went on very nicely and I'm looking forward to using it in the future as well. When I rewired the truck in '14 I used weatherpac connectors for the rear light harnesses knowing that some day I would add a hitch. Building patch cables for the trailer plug will be quick and easy.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Power bled the brake system today. Ran several quarts of fluid through it without so much as a speck of air. The pedal is very soft and deep on the first application and it comes up more over the next two strokes. There are no fluid leaks with the system under pressure and I am confident that I do not have any air in the system. I have 2 theories at the moment. First one is that the 2psi check valves are creating a vacuum and preventing the fluid from returning to the master cylinder. The successive rapid pedal strokes replace that missing fluid and bring the pedal back to where it should be. My other theory is that the new Chinese made Raybestos master cylinder was defective right outta the box. I'll remove the check valves from the system and re-bleed the system tomorrow.

I will say that even with no booster the pedal effort is incredibly easy. Feels like power assist! The T19 trans will take some getting used to as well. I found it challenging to step on the clutch pedal only once per shift. The 3/4 gate is in a different place in this trans and it's a bit vague. The 2/3 shift is slow. I'm using 80w90 Dino oil for now. I'll get some miles on it and see if anything changes. If the 2/3 shift doesn't speed up some I'm going to switch to Redline manual trans fluid.

All in all I'm pleased with the updates so far. I'll sort out the parking brake next week after the new cables show up.
