Thanks. I couldn't see paying $150 for the set on EBay and I didn't figure that sort of thing was avail at the dealer anymore. I'll try to remember to post up the dimensions tomorrow.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

I made some for my C-30 out of grade 8 bolts. Drilled my own grease passages and everything.
VERY satisfying.

A minor update and a couple of pics.

The front suspension is on and I started fitting up brake parts on tuesday. The brake hoses seem way too short (I ordered them from Rock Auto per their online catalog). I think if the wheels are turned away from straight ahead the hoses will snap. I've have to investigate hose p/ns when I get back home next. Aside from the hose issues, I believe just a few hours more hours will have the rest of the front brakes cleaned/painted/installed/ready to bleed.

I didn't touch the engine except to reinstall the front motor mount and drain the rest of the coolant. I did order a Victor Reinz head gasket earlier this week. I hope its something simple. I really don't want to pull the engine again.

I should be back home working on it in about 1.5wks.

If your having trouble finding the correct brake hose take a look at: (61-68 Dodge D300 p.u.) Napa part #
UP 244458 . As I am using a Chevy disc brake caliper may not be right, but I was looking to keep the same size fittings as stock.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Hot ****! It runs!

Only for about 15 sec last night as it was late, there is no donwpipe or muffler, and we live "in town".

I replaced all 3 freeze plugs and replaced the felpro headgasket with a Victor Reinz gasket ( steel bottom, composite center, copper top). The gasket still weeps under pressure. I'll heat cycle and retorque and see where we're at then. The head and block surfaces are pretty F'n flat. I couldn't pass a .0015 feeler gauge anywhere. The finish feels a bit course, but without the proper tooling there is no way for me to know what the finish is rated at. I tried starting it late last week with a 6v battery but it wouldn't turn over fast enough. Last night I static timed it with a test light and series wired 2 6v optima batteries. I applied 6v to the coil and 12v to the starter after topping off the float bowl and putting 5gal in the tank. Bango! She lit off almost instantly. Later this morning I'll fab a new bracket for the alternator and get a belt so I can run the engine for a while to get everything set up.

Since the starter doesn't like 6v I'm just going to go 12V now. The truck was converted to 12V previously. I have no idea how completely though. I'm guessing they put 12V field coils in the starter and I know the generator is 12V. I recently bought a 6V Delco 10si alternator and 6V coil thinking I was going to go back to 6V (believing the starter was still 6v). Now I'll get a 12V kit for the alternator, wire in a ballast resistor for the coil and carry on with 12V. I already have the resistor on the shelf and alt. kit is cheap.

I'll post up more progress and photos later today. I'll try to make a video or two as well. Got some errands to run and it's still a bit too early to fire it up again. My neighbors like me and I'd like to keep it that way.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

I've run the engine a handful of times over the last few days. Never more than a few minutes though as I'm still just getting things sorted out. I used a damaged generator bracket to create a new bracket for a delco 10si body alternator. The tensioning strap pivots on a custom mount I attached to the water pump. I can use the original fan belt, but I want to find something shorter to keep the alt closer to the block. I replaced the 6v coil with an internally resisted 12v unit so thats good to go. I finally got all of the front brake parts cleaned/painted/assembled. Setting the anchor pins was a time consuming task. I felt that cranking the adjuster "tight" without the feeler gauge in place first allowed the shoes to seat better before slacking the adjuster and setting the secondary shoe clearances with the feeler gauge. I had to knock both pins around several times before getting the results requested in the manual. I think the front drums are fairly new as the ridges on the outside of the drums were nonexistent. Today I also started tearing into the T-9 1LL transmission. It was full of oil so I propped it up above a drain pan. I popped the drain plug out, but nothing came out... After poking the crud in the bottom of the trans I got the oil flowing. There's a good bit of metal in there. Mostly the ends of the gear teeth. No major chucks, just a ton of flecks. I bought new input and output seals and will make new gaskets. I'll need to re-line the driveline brake band before re assembling that as it's badly worn and completely soaked with oil. The new output shaft seal is rubber with a control spring (I'll post a part number later) I'm hoping it will prevent a soaked parking brake in the future. The old oil seal appears to be felt. I hope to have the rest of the trans cleaned and reassembled on Sunday. Then it's time to check the bellhousing alignment and install the clutch. By the end of the day Monday the rear brakes need to be complete as I have to get the truck down off of the jack stands to move it. I'll post up some pics of the progress over the weekend.

Great progress!
I like what you're doing.
Don't get us started on 6v vs 12v.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Input shaft seal cr12363, output shaft seal cr20045. Got the rest of the trans broken down this morning. I had to make a pressing tool to get the reverse idler shaft out of the case. I'll post a pic later. The rev idler is pretty chewed up. I'll look at the other trans, if its better I'll swap the gears. I've got about half of the trans ready to re assemble. I should complete it on Sunday. You should have seen the quantity of sludge in the bottom of that gearbox. No joking- it was a solid 1-1/2" thick. It came out like gooey brownies. I'm not sure how long we'll keep this trans but I'm sure it'll get us by til we find something with overdrive, or possibly convert it back to an automatic.
