Re: L-S-160 Dump Truck Rebuild

I'd either weld an extension to the flange on the fender to mate up with the original hole in the cab or cut an 1-1/2" or so piece of flat bar with a hole drilled in one end to clamp the fender down. You can even weld a small bead at the opposite end from the hole to engage the oblong hole in the fender to reduce the chance of it slipping out.

Re: L-S-160 Dump Truck Rebuild

We have a driver!! Since I last posted I've been installing a Rebel wiring kit and fixing lights, putting the front end back together and yesterday I got my drivelines built. So last night at 10:00 I drove out of the shop and roared up and down the road a bit for a maiden voyage. The brownie works good but getting into 4th over is almost too much for 93 hp. It'll keep accelerating but it takes it's time about it. Now I need an exhaust and glass in the windows and it'll get halfway comfortable to drive. I also need 1/2" and 3/4" vacuum line for the Hydrovac but I can't find anyone that wants to sell a couple feet. They can order it but it'll come in a bulk roll. Anyone know of a source?

I'll post some pictures tonight.

Is there a truck stop with a garage anywhere reasonably close? That MIGHT be your answer. 'Cause they're not gonna sell a whole roll to a trucker for a relatively minor repair.

My brother suggested hydraulic suction hose if it is soft enough to be able to clamp. Next time I'm near the hydraulic shop I'm gonna look into that.

Drivelines! I was able to shorten and reuse the old drivelines which saved me 100-200 bucks.

Here's where the project is at now. I found the hood on craigslist a couple weeks ago.

I went the nutsert route to attach the fenders at the bottom and drilled new holes in the lip up at the top.The nutsert goes through two layers of sheetmetal so it's in there solid.

I like the nutsert idea...

Put plenty of anti-sieze on that bolt, then when you have to remove it years down the road it will not spin the insert.

Looking good, nice score on the hood. Looks like your windshield was involved in a shootout!

Re: L-S-160 Dump Truck Rebuild

Thanks, guys.

Bill, that's exactly what I did. I'm a firm believer in never-seez.

Matt, everyone likes that windshield. That's the way it was when I bought it. I'm kinda irritated that someone had to shoot the front and back windows out, but at the same time I'm glad they didn't hit the sheetmetal. I have another used one to put in and a seal for it, but I'm just not looking forward to the job.

Re: L-S-160 Dump Truck Rebuild

Today I swapped the passenger door for another that has better glass and a proper truck mirror already on it as well as mounting the mirror bracket on the driver side so I don't have to open the door and hang out to back up anymore. I had some fun with the lathe and mill and made a gauge panel for 2-1/16" gauges out of 1/4" aluminum last night. There's just barely enough room for them in the stock dash hole, but it works. I have a full set of KS gauges and sending units, but until the cab gets watertight I don't want them in there. I don't have a temperature gauge yet, so I used another ammeter to test the fit.

The retainers for the gauges will also hold the panel in.

Made some firewood this evening so I finally got to haul something and dump it out.
