Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Kevin-
I’m only going to pull the block and skim it if it leaks. The trough is about .0015-.002”. After talking with the machine shop we agreed it’ll likely seal just fine. If it doesn’t then I’ll pull the entire engine and have the block “trued up”. The stick out on the pistons is likely too much to do more than skim surfaces without running into collision issues.

Well I think I’m making progress. A substantial piece of angle iron and some thick plate (can’t recall dimensions at the moment) trimmed to fit and welded together will make a nice platform for the Saginaw steering box. As needed there are spacers between the plate and the frame rails to make up the differences. I’ll make standoffs to replace the stainless washers used to make up the difference between the top plate and the mounts on the steering box.

I think this just might work. Hahaha

The next bit of fun will be sorting out a steering column and double jointed shaft. I’m hoping the shaft will clear the shock tower… it sure looks close.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

What you have built looks really well done. I attached a few pictures of my idea of a frame strengthening bracket that will adapt a Saginaw power steering from a Chevy Malibu. These frames need extra support in that area. All but two of the 14 L&R pickups I have owned were cracked where the two frame pieces meet the front.
You may know that the Saginaw Pitman arm has several double wide splines to limit the installation of the Pitman Arm to one position. I have used a small triangle Nicolson file to modify this double spline into two splines. Now the Pitman arm can be installed in any position.
The pictures are of an L110, 1952 IHC pickup.

Thank you Gentlemen.

Nikki- I took queues from your build to create mine. Thank you for the inspiration.

Modified column to floor shift

Finally getting back to the truck after sitting about a year. I managed to source a tilt steering column from a ‘79 GM van. I took it apart and removed the column shift parts and welded up the collar. I made a mounting clamp/flange for the column out of a section of the original steering tube and some 16ga sheet stock. Fwiw- the original column in my truck is 2” od. The GM column is also 2” od so the original column dash clamp works great. The new column has auto cancelling turns and an integrated hazard switch so I’ll be removing the aftermarket parts from my truck.

The steering box is from a 70s IH truck. I’m using Borgeson products to connect the box to the column. A plain universal at the column, 3/4” DD shaft, and a vibration reducer universal at the box.

I’ve got the drag link sorted w modern tie rod ends and an adjusting sleeve. I intend to team the steering arms to a taper and use Chevy tie rod ends/sleeves and machine down my original center link to work w them. I want to do away with the spring loaded ball/cup original ends.

I hope to post more pics tomorrow evening. It’s nice to be back working on this truck instead of just leaning against it or stacking parts in/on it.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Turns out the GM tie rod ends I’d bought for the center link had a 2”/ft taper and not the more typical 1.5”/ft taper. As luck would have it I had ordered 5 inserts for the Jeep dimension tapered joints. They required me to bore the pivots to exactly .750” as the inserts measured at .7515”.

Jeep style tapered inserts .75” od

All four positions now have a pressed in insert that I then tig welded on both ends. Then I cleaned the tapers with a helical 5 fluted 1-1/2”/ft tapered reamer.

I shortened the original center link by around 11” and trimmed the ends to .6770” dia and cut fresh left handed 11/16-18 threads to accommodate the off the shelf adjusting sleeves. I’m waiting for 2 more right handed Jeep tie rod ends to arrive to replace the incorrectly purchased GM units.

Turned/threaded center link/sleeve adjuster

The pitman arm to left steering arm drag link is built with the same Jeep joints (this time using a right hand and a left handed unit) and the same adjuster sleeve. I’ve had to shorten the drag link threaded portions by about 3/4” each and I’ll also have to nip a 1/4” or so off of either end of the adjusted sleeve to make the drag link short enough to line everybody up.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Made some good progress yesterday and hope to make a little more today.

Crank pulley parts

I thought I was going to concert straight to serp belts but didn’t have an appropriate sized pulley for the W/P to maintain the current ratios so I dug through my collection of standard pulleys and found a double pulley that I parted the flange off of. I made a new mounting flange and tig’d it together. This balancer that Um using came from a pickup truck BG241 that I had for a while. I swapped the alt pulley for a modern width one. I have another double pulley that I am working on for the W/P. I’m actually going to cut off the rear most pulley and weld on another so I can get the same belt to belt spacing as my new crank pulley. Then it’s just a matter of making a mounting bracket for the P/S pump.

Steering shaft just clears shock mount

I think I’ll trim the top half inch or so off of the shock tower on this truck to ensure ample clearance for the steering int. Shaft. There’s just under a 1/4”, but I would feel better with more.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Nice work.
I made a bracket for a Saginaw power steering pump for the right side of the engine. The bracket shared the alternator/generator mount on the SD220 engine.
I do not have any pictures. This was a time before smartphones. Move ahead a decade or so and I have nearly 20,000 pictures of my Ford build.
