Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Been acquiring parts and prepping them for the swaps as time allows. My T19 is completed and ready to go. I pulled a 3.73 LSD disc brake Explorer rear end the other day.

I'm going to rebuild the axle with the "carbon" LSD kit and any other warranted components.

I've been researching and gathering the parts for my GM EFI conversion for a few weeks now. Today I had the change to work in the garage for a bit. I cut a 4-1/8" hole in the top of a spare fuel tank to make way for the GM in-tank pump/fuel/vent line assembly.

I had previously removed a section of a GM Astro van fuel tank.

I cleaned up the salvaged locking ring assembly and started fitting it to my IH fuel tank. The fit is quite close now. Just a few minor adjustments and I'll burn it in.

I had to shorten the inlet and return tubes over 2" so the pump screen would "just" rest on the bottom of the IH tank as it does in the factory GM tank.

Waiting for the parts to arrive to convert my Delco distributor to HEI. I have a 6" dia aluminum slug that I will turn into a Throttle body to intake manifold adapter. I'm waiting for a pair of 5 lug front hubs to arrive so I can start mocking up the front disc swap. I'm going to try "going my own way" on this one and see how it goes.

Well, Mister VWJake, I spent the last two hours re-reading your 29 pages of this rebuild. I have to say that you ae nothing short of a skilled genius. I am in total respect of the fantastic work you do. I like the many things you do to make the repair better than the OEM. nikkinutshop

Thank you Nikki. I'm trying. Some things don't turn out like I planned. That's when you go back to the drawing board and try again. If nothing else I am persistent.

You blaze an interesting trail, and you seem to document well. Those of us who are watching and those who may follow, really do appreciate all you are doing. Even when an Idea does not "pan" out, at least you have helped others to not go down that road. Sure do wish you were in my neck of the woods.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

I do understand the three steps forward and one step back thingee.
There are the Jeep Wagoneer axles I posted about the build of my son's L110 Shorty that will be dropped from the build and replaced with 1997 Ram 1500 axles. I messed up on my measurements and the Dana 44 Jeep axles are too narrow. I suppose I could have used the spacers I bought, but, I was not comfortable with the real possibility of wheel imbalance from misalignment of the wheels to the hubs.
I will try and find a buyer on, Craigslist, for the Wagoneer axles.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Smallest update. Been resurrecting a 1977 Honda Z50 trail mini so truck time has been limited lately.

I managed to to get to the junkyard the other day. I grabbed a pair of calipers and a brake rotor to test fit for version 1.

Rinsed the fuel tank and welded the pickup fitting to it today.

I'll etch it and put some sealer in a few days when I seal the minibike tank.
The Honda should be wrapped up by the end of next week. That will free up some time to get after some truck projects.

Re: '55 R-122 rehab

Thank you for the compliments. I enjoy the work and I've always hoped that seeing and reading about my trials and tribulations might encourage someone else that is on the fence to dive in and get dirty.
