Re: K-3 1st build

See if the rad cools sufficiently, if not then deal with it. There are aftermarket rads available and a whole lot cheaper than having a rad recored. I paid $500 in Thunder Bay to have my original recored. 2 weeks later repops were available on eBay for $250

So are the aftermarket repops the same size, but are more efficient?

Re: K-3 1st build

They will fit in the spot, because of what they are made of, I think they will be able to cool a larger engine than what came in your truck.

Re: K-3 1st build

It's been awhile since I posted any new pictures. I just wasn't happy with lighting and the progress but here goes.
I installed some fenders and steps to tie everything together. I shortened the front frame after taking the picture. I have the box cross members and hold down brackets in, and the checker plate deck is ready to go on this weekend. I put one headlight in on the good fender. The other fender is getting swapped out from the parts truck.

Re: K-3 1st build

It's been awhile since I posted an update. I have been picking away at my project, but not making alot of progress, or not happy with my work. Other projects, work, farming and family and life have been taking priority.
I have patched up the front fender, welded in a checkerplate deck and started on installing the brake booster, pedals and steering column.

Re: K-3 1st build

Lloyd,
Many of these newer frames have a "joint" about even with the transmission where the manufacturer just cobbed on the length of frame/ wheelbase they wanted. No reason why you can't adjust to where you want and then weld and box in when you're done.
Having said that starting with a correct wheelbase frame would be great. I almost always end up moving engine/trans backward so looks like a driveshaft cut is in the future no matter what.
I think it's much more important that the donor vehicle has most or all that you want. A good donor is like a 24/7 parts store that always has what you want in stock.
Old trucks were narrow, that's why I try to use narrow (little truck) donors.
Best of luck!

Re: K-3 1st build

BTW, Ian Roussel of Full Custom Garage put a big K cab and sheetmetal on a much later Chevy frame. He had to do some serious widening of the fenders to make it all work. Otherwise, later "big" frames will stick tires outside old, stock fenders.

Monsonmotors.....my name isn't Loyd
Although my chevy front end is wider than IHC stock, it's not overly wide. Maybe it's because the rims are offset The tires fit within the wheelwells. I like it.
When it's done or closer to done I will take better pictures of the tread width and stance.
It's a work in progress. I have more serious issues to work out.

Re: K-3 1st build

I call everyone Lloyd :)
Our moderator's name is Lloyd, too.
He is attempting to find the right wheelbase frame.
Hence my reply.
We voice our opinions here. I don't like wheels and tires sticking out of fenders except maybe on 4WD.
I like to spend time with a tape measure and write down the measurements of the donor sheetmetal and then find a donor that will be appropriate.
